Windows is genuine, knows it's genuine, but keeps forgetting it's activated.

Question
-
I don't even know where to start. I have a legitimate copy of Windows 7 that came with a custom-built computer I bought. The serial on the case activates with no errors... every time. Unfortunately, two or three times a day, Windows decides it hasn't been activated and insists I reactivate.
The somewhat scary thing is that when it does this, the displayed Product ID has changed. There has never been another Windows on this drive nor on any bootable partition on this computer. The only key it should have is the one from the label, but it keeps changing the Product ID and deactivating. I don't know what to do. I've activated over a dozen times, this week, and I'm afraid to make any changes to the hardware, lest it refuse to activate, next time.
Running the Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool provides the following results when Windows is properly activated:

The product key in a report can be different from the key on your sticker if Windows was installed without providing a key (Windows inserts a default key which cannot be used to activate) or an OEM SLP key was installed at the factory (which also cannot be used for manual activation).
What you may have is two installations of Windows. One report shows an OEM System Builder key and one report shows a retail key. You need to remove one of the installations. You may need to reinstall Windows using the dvd that came with the retail key. I recommend that you remove the System Builder installation if you can. Duplicate installations on the same volume cause no end of problems.

We can't tell unless the report is taken while the problem is occuring. The next time it happens check to see if the software protection service is running. Right click on Computer and choose Manage. Doubleclick on Services and scan the list. It is alpha.

In addition, you are using an out-dated version of the MGA Diagnostic Report tool. You are using version 1.9.0019.0, the most recent version (as of August 8th) is version 1.9.0027.0
The most current version can always be found at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

The only key I have is the OEM key, and the OEM disk, too. I'd hate to have to nuke the drive to get rid of the bad install. Is there another way? (I'm only seeing two directories called anything like 'Windows' one called 'Windows' and one called '$WINDOWS.~Q', if that's at all useful.)Wednesday, August 10, 2011 6:01 AM

A retail product key was used to install Windows on this computer. If you didn't do it you need to visit the party who did and have them fix it. A side by side installation (two installations in the same folder) has always been a no no with Windows.
