WIndows XP issue - My mess-up RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have my brothers PC (Dell), with Windows Media 2006. He had a nasty virus which disabled Sys restore, and also took out his IP addres, etc. I tried using my W-XP Pro disc to do a repair, and it will not accept my key code, or the Media Center code. I used my disc because I made a slipstream with SP3. Does anyone know what I can do to reverse the partial install repair? Is it possible to use my brothers original disc to fix the pc, at this stage? It is Windows Media Center 2006. Thank You for any help you can offer.

  • Hello zacsdad,

Of course the original Dell OS Reinstallation disc will work to recover the MCE installation on this Dell.

However, please be aware that the Recovery disc as a rule will erase the user partition of the hard disk drive so you'll need to copy off any data that you can't afford to lose.

If the computer cannot start into Windows, use an offline operating system disc to start the computer and run an OS that can support copying off your data.  Such as BartPE, Ultimate Boot CD, etc.
