I am having severe browser hang ups when I try to access the internet using IE (either IE6 or IE7 - both have the problem).  I can retrieve email via Outlook and access the web via Windows Explorer.  I have run the fix described in http://support.microsoft.com/gp/pc_ie_methodfour0010 and the add on that appears to cause the problem is Windows Genuine Advantage Self Support Tool.  I cannot disable this add-on.  I have tried to update this add on and run the GA Diagnostic Tool, neither of which solved the problem.  Please advise as to how to resolve this problem.

  • Hello Glaze,

After analyzing your diagnostic results all appears to be operating correctly. Also you mention attempting to disabling the Windows Genuine Advantage Self Support Tool. Do you mean the active x control or a tool? Can you explain exactly what is happening when you indicate IE is hanging? Are you receiving any error codes or error statements in conjunction with the IE Hanging?  Thank you.

  • I guess I mean the Active X control.  I was going off of that #4 method help item that I posted and that was the item that seems to be hanging me up.  I disabled 3rd party browser extensions and it worked fine.  I re-enabled it, went through each item one by one and that was the item that seemed to cause the problem.  I do not get an error message.  IE starts to load up, stalls, hangs to the point that I can't do anything with that page and after about 10 minutes, finally completes loading and seems to have fairly decent operability after that.  At the same time that all of this started happening, Norton SystemWorks became inaccessible.  Prior to that, everything was working fine.  It first occured on an initial boot up as I started my day.  No unusual sites, no unusual activities.  It just "wigged out".  I uninstalled and re-installed SystemWorks, went through an XP Repair process from my System Recovery disk - all to no avail.  Please let me know if you need more detail or information.  Thanks for your help.
