I went to microsoft to do the onecare scan and I am at the point it is asking me for a product key... I wasn't aware Ithere was a monitary committment... what can I do now?

You installed the trial download of a subscription product. You can do the free scan from here:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm
(I get there by typing
http://safety.live.com
as well)
You will want to remove the installed product you have now, too:
