  • I LOVE WHS, maybe too much.

4T later, I'm almost out of space AGAIN.

Originally set up an old PC to be the server, have added two SATA cards, since the old MB only had PATA.  I have music and video files duplicated on the server, but do not back up the server.  Boot drive is an old 80G PATA, with four 1T data drives.  I'm going to run out space again soon.

    1. Do I buy a third SATA card and another drive?
    2. Bite the bullet and buy a new MB with lots of built in SATA ports (although I'm concerned about the drives and files)?
    3. Buy and external drive and begin some form of occasional backup process and eliminate file duplication?
In my wildest dreams, I couldn't have imagined this project to be this successful.

  • Start replacing 1 TB SATA drives with 2 TB drives:

    • Buy a 2 TB drive and a SATA to USB bridge device.
    • Connect the new drive to your server using the bridge.
    • Add it to the storage pool.
    • Remove 2x 1 TB drive from the storage pool.
    • Uninstall the 2x 1 TB drive you just removed from server storage.
    • Install the 2 TB drive internally.
Repeat if you need to replace the other two drives.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Ken,

Thank you for your as always great response!

Just to confirm, I can set up the new drive via USB and then hook it to a SATA port after it's part of the system?

When I had a drive go bad, I used my external 750G drive to pull the drive out of the system and then added a new drive and uninstalled the external drive.

I do have a USB housing I could use.

I'll be back in a couple of weeks trying to resolve my daughters laptop connection issue :(

I like bridge devices rather than enclosures. You effectively connect the bare drive to your server, rather than having to install/uninstall in an enclosure. But an enclosure will do the same thing. :)
