Vail "Windows setup could not configure windows...." installation failure

Question

Decide to try out WHS Vail. I took my existing WHS system, disconnected drives, added 1 new 1.5Tb drive and proceeded with install. System basics: Asus M3A76 motherboard, 4GB memory, AMD X2 BE-2350 CPU (it is x64). Burned iso image to DVD (checked the CRC Hash) and installed. It goes through all the steps until "completing installation". At this point, a message pops up "Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware".
My hardware does meet the system requirements. I see that a network connection is required. This motherboard uses a Realtek RTL8111C chipset, which is very common. I'm still thinking this night be the problem. I went through installation 2 times with same result. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi !
It's rather hard to tell what is exactly going on.
Could you do a bugreport on Connect?
For exact what to logs to add to the bugreport(and how to get them), see page 23/24 of the Windows Server Code Name "Vail" Preview Release Notes.

My release notes are 26 pages long. On page 25, there is a section on error reporting and the Vail log collector tool. I downloaded this. Since install did not complete, I can't install this on failed install. I could move the hard drive to another PC, install on that PC and then run tool. Is that what I need to do? Sorry if this is a dumb question.Friday, May 28, 2010 9:32 PM

There is a list of 4 choices (depending on the phase in which the erro occured).
Yours is the : During WinPE (customized portion.. ). Read the (more detailled) instructions there.

How about disabling the onboard NIC before installing. If succesfull, you can troubleshoot afterwards?- Theo.

Vail will not complete installation if it doesn't detect a NIC.- Theo.

Not correct. In installed WHS (both V1 and Vail) on machines that have an undetected onboard NIC. (I installed them after setup completed).

Have a nice day!First, I'm not talking about v1 (yes, v1 will install without a network connection). However, if Vail doesn't find a network connection during installation, the installation will fail. I know this for a fact because I specifically tried it and I saw the error message. The only option is Restart, which reboots the computer, gets to the same point, and gives the same error message again.
Did you automate your Vail installation by using an answer file (cfg.ini)? If so, did you have CheckReqs set to 0? If so, I can see why your installation might not have failed in that case. (I didn't use an answer file when I got the error message.)

I guess you did miss my "both V1 and Vail". And no, it was not an automated installation.

Have a nice day!No, I didn't miss where you mentioned v1. I agreed that v1 will install without a network connection. As for Vail, here is the screen shot you get when Vail doesn't find a network connection. I don't know how you got it to install without one.

I had this problem. Vail did not see my nic card, it restarted a couple of time before I figured out it was in a loop. I finally just did a Control-Alt-Dlete when it is looking for the NIC, stopped the install process, which takes you back to the desktop. Went to the control Panel, installed NIC drivers, and then restarted the computer. Picked up where it left off, and finished the install. Worked fine after that.Monday, May 31, 2010 6:34 AM

I guess I was just lucky.

Nice work around!
- Theo.Btw:
Theoretically, supplying the correct drivers by pressing F6 in the initial stage of the installation process should also solve missing or incorrect driver problems.
As an alternative one can consider disabling the NIC and adding an additional NIC that is known to be suppoerted by Windows 2008 Server.
