  • Hello Jerad,

    Please read through this earlier post to see if you might have any of this software installed.  If you have none of these programs, please post again with the list of programs you do have installed.  Thank you!

    There are several threads in this forum that refer to Error 0xc004d401 causing non-genuine status or preventing activation.  In those threads, we have discussed 3 applications that have been identified as conflicting with Vista software licensing technology (which causes the issue).  Please find an update below for each:

    * PC Tools Spyware Doctor

    PC Tools notified us today that they have posted a new verison of Spyware Doctor on their web-site that no longer manifests the issue. Great thanks to the PC Tools folks for their very responsive help in making the change!

    * Trend Micro Internet Security (incl. PC-Cillin Anti-Virus)

    The issue has only been known to arise when upgrading from XP to Vista.  Versions of Trend Micro Internet Security 14.56 and greater do not manifest the 0xc004d041 error.  If you receive the error and are running this application, please download and install the latest version of Trend Micro's software.

    * nProtect GameGuard

    This issue was uncovered only recently. Our security protection team is attempting to contact nProtect to discuss the issue (per the latest status I have, which is nearly 1 week old). I'm hopeful that we've already made contact and are discussing -- I'll ping the protection team for more details.

    Thanks everyone! Rich

  • Hi

    I have had that same error twice now, i also have gameguard on my pc (lineage2), but the strange thing is that i get this error even when my pc is idle, and no games (or gameguard) is loaded.

    Could we get any more info about this please ?

    ps: i have a VLK licence key, and the final vista ultimate running, no beta's, no other programs that are not vista ready installed yet

  • btw i have been running vista since the day the VLK keys got available (about a 5-6 weeks ago?) and this has happened twice to me, first time i solved it by ... just rebooting !

    but somehow a reboot is not an answer that satisfied me :)

  • Joeri:

    Can you output the diagnostics data when the issue occurs again with your VLK installed? I would like to see if your licensing state has changed.

    I already found out it is gameguard for sure, every time i stop playing the game that has gameguard running, like 5-10 minutes later i get the validation error.

    When i reboot and run the diagnostic tool it says my key is valid.

    so lets see who takes the first step to fix this, microsoft or gameguard :p

    I'm working to find the answer for you. Until this current spate of questions we believed that GameGuard had indeed updated and that you should be able to run the game and have it automatically update to the new Vista compliant version.  I'll let you know as soon as I do why this isn't the case for you.  In the meantime you can uninstall the game, and revalidate here http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ (by clicking on Validate Windows) which should get rid of the messaging.  Let me know if it doesn't.  Thank you for pursuing this issue.  You can be assured we are pursing it on our end.

    Thanks!

  • hi

    well i don't need to uninstall the game to revalidate, all i need to do is reboot and validate before i start the game (gameguard).

    then everything works fine, so far i haven't seen any update from nprotect yet, usually they update the game on thuesdays ...

  • I also have this 0xC004D401 immedialtely after installing both comodo firewall and avira antivir so I'm not sure which has caused the problem. What should I do? Many thanks.

  • I too am having the 0xC004D401 message pop up a lot, but I dont think I have anything installed from the list.  Also, I'm not sure if this is related or not, but suddenly, my computer won't print anything.  It recognizes that the printer is attached, but won't interact with it.  Any ideas what's wrong?  I'm a college student, so I depend heavily on my computer, especially the printer.

  • assuming Spyware Doctor is the peoblem, all I have to do is intstall the new version?  Do I need to revalidate/activate anything else?
