WHS Connector upgrade failure RRS feed

  • Question

  • The WHS Connector icon on the taskbar has turned red and says 'Upgrade Windows Home Server Connector', but when I try to upgrade, either via the upgrade button from clicking the icon, or from the executable downloaded driectly from the server, I get the setup wizard which locates the server, and then displays 'Downloading software... 0% completed' for a couple of minutes, then an error message is displayed:

"The files were not downloaded from the server.
Please verify that your network connection is active and that your Windows Home
Server is powered on. Then restart this wizard."

Needless to say, the network connection is fine, and the server is on and accessible throughout the attempted upgrade. I have tried the upgrade several times, but always get the same error message.

Any ideas what I can try next?

  • It happened to me on a Vista machine and XP machine a couple of weeks ago.......must have been some sort of upgrade? I couldn't update either. Uninstalled WHS connector software from Control Panel on each of the clients, ran setup.exe form the Shares folder on the server, everything re-installed OK. Maybe it will work for you too?

  • You can try accessing your server using this URL (replace <myserver> with the name of your server):

    http://<myserver>:55000

  • I have the same issue and tried your suggestion.

received a message "You are not authorized to view this page"

On same page, downloaded the toolkit and ran it, received a message saying "I do not have sufficient access rights"

Same problem on three computers, Vista, XP, and Win Media.

    Ideas?

  • This happens to me every time an update is released. I have a Fujitsu laptop running WinXP Pro. I can tell when Microsoft has released an update to my server because I can no longer connect to my server from the laptop.
I try every hint & tip out there, but to no avail.
So i have to uninstall the connector software from the laptop, and reinstall it, and hopefully it works on the 2nd or 3 try.
I don't appear to be alone with this problem, so what is the permanent fix for this.
I'm still in Eval stage for the home server, I haven't bought it yet, and if this happens all the time ( as it has so far), I see no reason to pay for something I have to constantly fix.
That's not what I wanted from this software.
Does anybody know a sure fire fix?

Sure, I can access the server this way - this is how I downloaded the setup executable to try a direct connector upgrade/install (which failed the same way), and I can still use the connector to access the server (and I can also access it via Remote Desktop), but I'd really like to have an upgraded connector and turn that red taskbar icon green.

I'll try uninstalling and re-installing it.

Thanks Ross, I'll give it a shot.

  • Just FYI, uninstalling and re-installing the WHS Connector software directly from the server did the job. All working correctly now, with nice green icon.

Looks like the Connector upgrade process is broken.

Thanks to all for your help.

  • If you run the setup for the shares directly it uninstalls the old one automatically and installs the new one. I can never get my computers to do the update correctly. :-(  I have had to do this on all the updates.

  • And as another FYI, when you run the connector install from http://server:55000 you're running the same installer as you would be running from the shares...
