Windows home server 2011 RC to retail

Question
-
Sorry if this has already been posted but was unable to find a related thread.
Basically have been using the RC since its release and have just bought the retail OEM and am waiting for delivery. I am just curious as to weather i need a fresh install or can i just put the Key into the RC version and it will auto update to the retail???

You will need to reinstall. Make sure that any data you want to preserve is not on your primary hard disk which will be formatted to create C: (for the OS) and D: (where you will find your shares).

This is how I did it:
- In Vail, moved all shared folders to my main 2TB data drive
- Shut down Vail and removed connections to 2TB drive and did a fresh WHS2011 install on the 500GB boot disk on which Server Folders were created.
- Shut down server and reconnect 2TB drive. Booted and renamed all Server Folders on 2TB drive as NameOld (e.g. MusicOld)
- Ran the Move Folder wizard from the Dashboard to move Shared folders from D: to E: (2TB drive).
- Logged in locally and moved files from MusicOld to Music (both on same 2TB disk) and deleted the NameOld folders.
This worked for all my data and took no time at all as there was no copying from disk to disk. I could not get the old client backups to work so deleted them all and started again.
I think all the Drive Extender equivalents are still in Beta.

just thinking about it the lack of hard drive extender actually helps me here. had 2 x 2tb drives can just install this to the client back up hdd and then copy my files onto it before reformatting the original system drive. this should work right???
also dont suppose any1 is using the new 3rd party driver extender software thats about??

I've tested all three that I am aware; Drive Bender, Stable Bit, and Drive Harmony. I have abandoned Stable Bit and Drive Harmony and concentrating on Drive Bender which, in my opinion, is the best of the lot in the current stage of development. Stable Bit is fine, just prefer the "look and feel" of Drive Bender which is more flexible. Drive Harmony has quite a ways to go to be competitive feature wise; to me, it just appears to be nothing more than a virtual RAID in disguise. Folder duplication is limited to the size of the smallest drive in the pool. The technology appears to be sound, it just needs to be refined with more features and less limitations.
Look as if Drive Bender will also be the first to RTM, should happen in the next few weeks.

thanks for the replies lads. good to know bout drive bender will be a few weeks before i get the chance to get stuck into re installing etc. hopefully by the time i am drive bender is RTM and i can push ahead installing that fresh at the start too.
As i havent used any of the drive extenders on 2011... does it work the same as it did on v1?

Basically, for Drive Bender, yes. Takes more steps to set it up, but allows much more flexibility. Allows non-destructive add and removal of drives from the pool. Allows more than one drive pool. I have mine set up with "D;" being the mount point, the same as v1. I have also had a separate pool for server back-up, but most likely will stay with just one drive pool.
