Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine (when it is!!)

Question
-
We have a desktop and a laptop in our small company, both run Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 32-bit. They were both upgraded several years ago from Vista using separate retail DVDs which were purchased in Dec. 2009 from CCL Online in the UK. Recently the desktop has started to display the message: "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine" and it will not perform Windows Update. Our software is 100% genuine. I still have the original DVDs, Product Keys and boxes with the hologram. I have tried to find a solution, including the Windows validation page with the rotating green circle. It says "this may take a few minutes" So far it has been connected for 17 hours!!! I have wasted hours of valuable work time!!!
I ran the diagnostics tool. The results are below. Can anybody help?
This is EXTREMELY annoying and time consuming. Next time I'll seriously consider using Apple computers in the business.

...although the SFC itself is clear.
As you can see, both are actually the same error.
The normal solution at this point is a repair install of Windows - which is what I propose...
Download the SP1 Refresh for your language and edition from the links on these pages...
Heidoc -Microsoft DR Download links
The links are for downloads from the Digital River servers run for MS, so are about as safe as you can get :)
Once you have it downloaded, you then need to burn the DVD from it - use either the Windows Disk Image Burner, or (better still) your favourite burning application at the slowest speed possible.
Note that you do NOT 'drag and drop' the file to the disk, you must use the 'burn an image' option from your app - or you'll end up with a useless coaster :)
Once you have the
disk burnt, check that it boots the (or any other) system OK - but do NOT start
the repair from there - you must start the repair from within a normal Windows
boot.Follow the instructions in this tutorial - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html
- and they should help you get through it (it's not as difficult as it looks!)
Always ask questions first if you're unsure - either here, or in sevenforums.
Good luck with it!

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.
SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.
Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

Hi Noel,
Thank you for your help. You were right it does take hours to complete the CHKDSK and SFC. I left it to run SFC all night.
The result was: "Windows Resources Protection did not find any integrity violations"
I uploaded the CBS.log and MGADiag as a zip file to: h ttps://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=EF6F81DA54DDBC35!105
I had to put a space after the h in https because it would not allow me to include a hyperlink.
The MGADiag is here below.
Thanks again..

There are a considerable number of errors in the background CBS.log file, despite the SFC being clear - they are all like this...
Line 53609: 2013-09-23 12:40:38, Error CBS Failed to check whether package is partially installed, package: Windows7SP1-KB976933~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.1.1.17514 [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND] Line 53611: 2013-09-23 12:40:38, Error CBS Failed to call external evaluate applicability on package: Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.1.1.17514, Update: 976933-0_neutral_PACKAGE [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]
I think you should try running the CheckSUR tool and see if that helps...
Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)
Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file
Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

Hi Noel,
I downloaded and installed CheckSUR kb947821. It took about 4 hours to run.
The CheckSUR.log file is at h ttps://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=EF6F81DA54DDBC35!105
I notice that in the Control Panel>System page under 'Windows activation' it still says ProductID: Not Available. My laptop has information in this area and a blue MS genuine software symbol.
Thank you very much for your continued support.
Friday, September 27, 2013 6:25 PM -
That's a fairly long time - even for CheckSUR - especially when it found nothing of any real note!
The resulting log is 'normal' for a machine with IE10 installed.
Please run another SFC /SCANNOW and post the new CBS/log file

...although the SFC itself is clear.

Hi Noel,
I download the SP1 software 'X17-24208.iso', burned it on to a DVD and attempted to install it. There were a few in compatibility/old programs which I mostly resolved or removed where I could find them in 'Control Panel' > 'Programs & Features'. After that ran all night on Saturday. On Sunday morning there was a message to say the 'upgrade' had failed. Message:
'Windows could not configure one or more system components. To install Windows restart the computer and then restart the installation'
It reverted to the old set-up... :-(
Not being one to give-up easily, I then downloaded and ran 'MS Win 7 Upgrade Advisor' as it suggested. It found one incompatible program, and gave it a red cross symbol; I removed it. I also updated a driver as it suggested and I removed iTunes after first de-registering this PC. There were three programs mentioned as having no capability information; I could not find them. I then re-ran the installation from 2 pm to 7:30 pm on Sunday. Everything was working well and looking hopeful until the last stage 'Transferring files, Settings and Programs'. To my astonishment (and annoyance!) it failed again!! The message again is:
'Windows could not configure one or more system components. To install Windows restart the computer and then restart the installation'
Again it reverted to the old setup, which I'm, using to write this.... :-((
Do you have any suggestions? Is there a log that can tell me why it failed? How can I removed programs which I cannot see and tidy up any other issues?
Fortunately the whole weekend was not wasted waiting for this problem to resolve. I built a garden fence... :-)
Thanks again..

I'm not an expert in reading the logs from the Setup routine - I recommend posting in Sevenforums to see what they advise.
