Hmmm a vista disk direct from microsoft is a pirated copy. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Never knew that Microsoft could pirate there own software but for the last week my vista's been telling me otherwise. My computer just won't pass the wga check, yet for the last 3 months I've been using vista without issue. Please help in this matter. I hate paying good money for software to then, a few months later, tell me it's illegal. My email is terrybeaulac@hotmail.com  . Please contact me if any solutions or ways of alternate authentication are available.

  • The below is what i recieve.

This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation. Either an unauthorized change was made to your Windows license or a software program installed on this computer is not currently compatible with Windows Vista.

Access to the latest updates, all available features, and product support is reserved for customers running genuine Microsoft software. Until this copy of Windows passes genuine validation, certain features of Windows Vista may be disabled.

    Steps You Can Take

Repair possible corruption or resolve compatibility issues

    1. Start by trying to repair the corrupted file:
      • Scan the hard disk. Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking Disk Cleanup.
      • When Disk Cleanup completes, restart the computer and re-enter your Windows product key if instructed. To re-start, choose Restart from the Lock button menu.
      • After restarting the computer, validate Windows again by going to your Windows product key if instructed. To re-start, choose Restart from the Lock button menu.
      • After restarting the computer, validate Windows again by going to http://www.Microsoft.com/genuine and clicking Validate Windows.
    2. If Windows validation still fails after running Disk Cleanup, the next step is to update or uninstall any software that is not compatible with Windows Vista.
      • For the latest information on compatibility issues, visit the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Forum (English Only) or Windows Vista Newsgroups. A solution for known compatibility issues may be available from Microsoft or from the software vendor.
      • If there are no known issues with software already installed on your computer, it may be necessary to remove any recently installed software (including Microsoft updates) in order to resolve the problem. To uninstall programs, open Programs and Features by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then clicking Programs and Features. Select a program, and then click Uninstall.
      • After updating or uninstalling potentially incompatible software, validate Windows again by going to Windows Vista Newsgroups. A solution for known compatibility issues may be available from Microsoft or from the software vendor.

  • Hello,

It looks like you've validated successfully.  Can you tell me what kind of messages you are getting that tell you your software isn't genuine?

Also, please tell me what error code you see on the page you get to when you fail validation.  The error code will be gray and in brackets at the end of the message on that page.  It'll look something like this [0x8000C000].  Thank you!
