Separate voice and data (Instant messaging) on 2 VLANs RRS feed

  • Hi, 
    Would like to find out if there is any way to separate the voice and data traffic into 2 separate VLANs.

  • This is not currently possible. You can apply QOS but Vlans are based on IP address and not protocol and since the voice and data originate on the same network card this is not feasible.

    I assume this question is in relation to a current Cisco deployment and integrating into your OCS deployment into your current QoS architecture. My question would be what do people preceive the benifit of placing the voice traffic on a seperate VLAN in a high bandwidth enviroment? Other than mapping to your current architecture of course. Not having a dig at your question but more just trying to find out why people would want to do this.
