Hardware change, Hard Drive muscial chairs question RRS feed

  • Question

  • So I'm replacing just about everything except the hard drives and power supply today (currently running on an AMD Althlon 600 MHz processor with less than 1 GB RAM, upgrading to an AM2 Sempron and 2 GB), and I had one question. If I get the HDDs in the wrong slots, will WHS auto-recognize the old drive pool and use it as usual? Or is the pool locked down with absolute paths to the drives (like Linux's  /dev/hd0 system) and will need a restore install?

  • As long as all the drives are present and you provide any drivers required when you reinstall (so they will all be recognized) you should be OK. Windows Home Server marks every drive in the pool with a unique identifier.
