Impossible to delete files

  I am trying to delete unwanted files in MS Word but when I define them and press Delete I get the message "This action cannot be completed because the file is open in MS Office Word." But it NOT open. I am now ammassing a pile of files that I no longer want but which cannot be deleted because of this ____-up.
