Importing Data from Spreadsheet per Record RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there a way to use an Import Data tool to import attribute data that exists in a spreadsheet on a per record basis without knowing what the GUID is ?

Users would like to be able to open  a form on an existing record and then use the import tool to point to a spreadsheet and import the data from that spreadsheet.  The column names would match the attribute names however these spreadsheets would come from the customer who would not know the GUID or record name and thus it would not be on the spreadsheet itself.

Is there any other way possible to import data in this way knowing the context of the record the user is on?

  • Robert,

The OOB wizard doesn't gather the context information to set the entity / record that the data would be imported to. Have you considered exporting the data to an excel from CRM & make it available for re-import and then provide this spreadsheet for data entry to your customers (data provider). You will then be able to use the excel for import.

Other alternative is to use custom code to update the record that can be triggered by a custom ribbon button on the record.

  • Thank you,

The option to export the data to Excel first was considered. However, customers are using a template and will be feeding back to us their information, which won't have identifiable information.  CRM users will know what records to open to import the data.

Can you elaborate on the button option? Perhaps invoke a plugin to fire a data import job with the context?
