Live Mesh Beta: Suggestions - Go cast your vote!

General discussion

<Updated 3/19/2009>
We have had a huge number of customer feature requests since the first release of Live Mesh in April 2008. These feature requests were first catalogued in a Wish List and then, once our beta phase started, a new Suggestions thread. Now that our Microsoft Connect site has been open to everyone for a little while, we thought a new and improved suggestions thread was in order. What is the improvement? You can now rate the top suggestions on Connect. Just follow the link below and cast your vote:
Top Suggestions Page
Of course, we still want to hear any new suggestions you may have, so feel free to post your ideas here. Or, better yet, open a new suggestion, and start a thread here on the forums with a link to your suggestion so that others can vote for it. (Please note that you will need to sign into Connect in order to leave feedback.) Live Mesh continues to evolve in response to all your great feedback, so keep it coming!(Again, all current top suggestions can now be found here.)
Thank you,

Is voting by validation or by star rating - or a combination of both?Tuesday, January 27, 2009 12:22 AM

Hey Nachmore, that's actually a really good question.
To help break it down I'll do the quick and easy Ken brings you Connect!
Any feedback that is submitted by anyone into Connect has two options for other people to comment on it.
Vote & Validation.
Validation is really just that, you are validating that you are encountering the same problem, most people use it for bug type feedback not suggestions. This helps us to determine how many people are hitting a particular bug. If we see a lot of validations and duplicate bug reports it definitely gets a lot more visibility by the team on what priority it should be in the fix list. (That's not to say that bugs with very low validation/duplicate reports don't get looked at!)
Voting is how important this bug or suggestion is to you. Each person has their own idea on what is important to them. What I may want may not be exactly what you want or what Ben wants. The star rating (1 through 5) is for you to tell us what you think of a suggestion or bug and how important it is to you. Sometimes we think, "Hey this is pretty important! Customers must want this because we think it's a super cool idea!" And we find out that no, most of you want something else entirely. By Voting it helps us to determine what new features to implement first in future releases. Not all will make it in, and some may take longer to add then others, but trust me on this one, your voice on the votes really helps us out!
So in a nutshell,
Validation == I can reproduce this problem too!
Vote == This is how important this bug or suggestion is to me!Hope that helps clear things up for everyone.
-Ken

Great stuff Ben. The Live Mesh team could teach the rest of Microsoft (especially the Windows Live team) a thing or two about engaging with customers and soliciting feedback.

In order not to dirty the Connect space, could we please reopen: "Live Mesh Bar attached to local Explorer folders is annoying"so that people can vote on that feature.
I would imagine that the feature would be finer grained control over the display of the window - I would probably prefer to set it to as hidden as possible (say an extra button on the menu bar), although it's not a hugely annoying feature of Live Mesh.

Hi Oren,It would actually be preferable to have you open a new suggestion. With the way these suggestions (submitted through Connect) get tracked internally by the team, a new suggestion will have better visibility than reactivating an old one.
Thanks,
Ben.

I would love to be able to add another device from another user. I remote connect to my girlfriend's laptop all the time to help her out. She runs live mesh too. It would be so easy to add her laptop to my devices under her username instead of having her sign into live mesh under my user name and adding it to my devices.Wednesday, January 28, 2009 5:52 PM

First thing is I completely agree with Nightryder21, I do the same for my parents, my little brother, a tecchie friend who I often troubleshoot \ test out things with, my girlfriend and her mother.... so all and all, it would be very useful!
My new suggestions are:
1- to allow exe files to by synced... in fact just to have no restriction on file types, including hidden files.
2- to be able to create a structure of live folders in the live desktop. Personally i think that having it as tabs would be great, kind of like how microsoft live workspace has "workspaces" on the left and then you actual files on the right. Although, using tabs like this would have the same issue of having a single level of organization.

Hi Julien,
Just a quick note - Live Mesh currently allows the syncing of .exe files (I'm syncing one as we speak)... other file types (as detailed here) are somewhat problematic.

Oren

Hey,
So I am an active user of iPhoto and Picasa on my Mac and PCs. I have many photos on the applications and as you may know these applications store photos in odd ways - they don't just have a folder they have original files, temp files and whatnot.
I'd love a mesh plugin for both of these applications that would sync my libraries - iphoto to iphoto, picasa to picasa, iphoto to picasa, and store the photos online as a backup.
This would be such a good feature!
I also think the Mac version should be identical to the windows one otherwise many users will get confused.Thursday, February 5, 2009 5:41 PM -

- USB stick support (portable client that doesn't need installation).
- Finish implementing the other applications that we've seen in the videos. Looks like you've got some exciting stuff planned other than file sync, but so far I haven't seen anything.
- Better handling of animations on the remote desktop. It needs to start dropping old frames and keep the keyboard/mouse responsive.

Suggestion: Allow file syncing without user being logged in
I'd like to support file syncing on machines that have no user logged in. This would allow backing up server devices that have important files, but typically have no user logged in on them.

Hi there,
Here are my main 2 suggestions - great software already though!
1) Favorites syncing: this is the best way I have found yet to sync my favorites between devices, right into my IE Favorites folder, so thank you! But everytime you click on a favorite to open a site in IE, Live Mesh thinks you updated the link, and adds it to the "News" tab as an updated file, thereby clogging it with "junk" activity. Is there anyway to avoid this?
2) While I love most of the "Live" software suite, I would like to be able to set some of them to log in automatically, and not others. For example, I would like Live Mesh to log in automatically, but not Messenger, or live mail on the web. At the moment, the minute you set one fo them to log in automatically, they all do.
Hope these make it into your list soon
Thanks
Regards

Please add an option to disable the "Interact with remote computer" & "Tips and Tricks" Panel/Window when connected with live mesh remote desktop.
It really takes a lot of space and after reading it a few times it really is not needed any more.

Been said, but I'll add my "vote" for the idea...
Live Mesh and Live Sync need to be merged into the best of both! I should be able to:
1. Sync any file which can be managed by MOE (I know, some DB types are tough)
2. Invite anyone with a Windows Live ID to sync a particular folder from/with me
3. Use SkyDrive as a sync location, without the 50MB limit on an individual file
Also, can we please
1. Get rid of the need to drop down into Vista Basic color scheme for Remote Desktop?
2. Figure out how to setup sync for a folder when one of it's subfolders is already setup for sync?Friday, March 13, 2009 2:07 PM -

TAKE REMOTE CONTROL OUT OF THE FEATURE LIST... IT SUCKS AND IS NOT USABLE. MAKES THE WHOLE CONCEPT/ABILITY OF LIVE MESH LOOK LIKE A JOKESunday, March 29, 2009 5:27 PM

I want the multi-monitor bug back! I have multiple monitors on my mesh-connected computers, but when I connect to them, I really only want my primary desktop... as opposed to the whole thing all squished together.... makes it near impossible to work with on a netbook. thanks! (technically, I really would like the option to "choose" which monitor I want to make visible in Mesh's remote desktop)Tuesday, March 31, 2009 6:41 PM
-
Been working on a netbook myself, and here's a suggestion: When you're not in full screen view, you have the option to switch between squished and actual size. Switch to actual size, and the setting sticks when you switch to full screen. Then the screen is actual size and you can scroll around by continuing to move the mouse after it has reached an edge.
For me, the previous multi-monitor setup was a bit of a pain because it would force my gadgets into my primary monitor and reset the refresh rate on the CRT to the bare minimum, which would really kill my eyes.
I dunno how fully featured they intend on making the remote desktop, but yeah the ability to have a bit more control would be nice. I personally would also like to see the ability to hide the blue bar at the top.Monday, April 6, 2009 7:37 PM -

Bandwidth and Data Throughput Control
Dear All,
My Feature Suggestion is that on each device Live Mesh monitors and manages bandwidth/data throughput. Suggested controls:
1 - View Current and required data throughput to complete sync on each device, based on when last seen, and what has happened since across the connected Mesh.
2 - Set Sync only on certain network Connections (to avoid using 3G or HSDPA at £15 per GB, only sync when on unmetered connection)
3 - Be able to set default to Manual sync (for example on a laptop with varying interent connectivity) or Auto sync for a desktop on a Broadband connection
4 - Include a time to complete Sync feature, using data to go and average throughput from the previous 3 mins, together with some times for sample rates, you may choose to go to a coffee shop for WiFi or stick with GPRS depending on what needs to be done
5 - Be able to mark a file or folder and contents with a sync priority (Low, Med, High should do) whereby this could determine the order by which files are synced and also how much of the available bandwidth is allocated to Live Mesh - All bandwidth until the high's are done - Normal background bandwidth until the Mediums are done and finally minimal (5Kb/s perhaps) to slowly bring the lows in sync.Tuesday, May 26, 2009 3:42 PM -
Hi,
I would like to suggest a change to mesh desktop sharing.I understand folder to folder sharing in live mesh. But, it seems like a complicated way to perform a simple task. Rather than inviting live ID'd to share individual folders, It would be better to have a feature to allow chosen user ID's to access the entire mesh desktop and it's folders or contents . This feature would be simple to add and would be easier. the link below is more explaination.

That would a feature request for Windows Live SkyDrive. Live Mesh doesn't share out files, you share folders. The Live Desktop is not meant as a file store for public or shared downloads, it is a sync point to share with other Live Mesh users.

Not sure if this should be classified as bug or suggestion...Identical files (same hash) in the same folder / path should not generate conflictsI have two identical folders (exactly same files), one in my work pc and other at home. I added both to Live Mesh keeping the folder (live mesh folder) name. First thing I noticed was that all files were duplicated in Live Mesh. After a while the Live Mesh App found thousands of conflicts (1 for each file), and asked me to resolve them. After solving the conflicts the news feed showed: "thousands of files were deleted by AJCS", and thousands of files were "created" in my recycle bin.
Since the files are totally identical I think this shouldn't happen. Before the sync process start a hash could be computed to check if the file(s) are identical. If so, no transfer should be done (for that file), but the sync status should be updated.Tuesday, June 30, 2009 9:05 PM -
Suggestion: Live Mesh should allow desktop folder (c:\users\username\desktop) synchronizationCurrently Live Mesh doesn't allow you to sync the desktop folder (c:\users\username\desktop).I believe that desktop synchronization is very useful and would like to see it in future releases.Tuesday, June 30, 2009 9:14 PM

Please give an option to totally hide the Live Mesh bar that shows up next to Windows Explorer and/or integrate its functions into Explorer! That irritating feature has kept me using Windows Live Sync when I'd rather be using Mesh. It is very distracting and takes up screen space. Also, an option to not change the appearance of icons of folders when you add them to Mesh. The blue folders look weird.
In short, I like Live Mesh's online desktop capability, but aesthetically prefer Live Sync's minimalist, in-the-background, non-intrusive appearance.
Sunday, July 12, 2009 11:44 PM -
I would like Live Mesh to integrate with SkyDrive.
SkyDrive provides you with masses of storage, however it's means is less useful to me that LM. I would like to see an option in LM that allows you to disable the SkyDrive element of Windows Live for your account, but transfer that 25GB entitlement from SyDrive into LM.
That would then give yo ua 30GB LM account which is much more useful. You basically have your entire My Documents folder as a Mesh directory!
Richard Green, MCPFriday, August 7, 2009 1:59 PM -
Hi, Richard. You're not alone in this request. In my opinion, it is more than just Live Mesh and SkyDrive, but also Live Sync. There needs to be a merger of these services.

My Suggestions:
1) Extra Sync Settings please. I mistakenly deleted a file from Live Mesh and that file rapidly deleted from every share. Please add a feature for this. I can be able to store my Mesh files in a Backup share, could be modified but not deleted or blanked.
2) More detailed logs. This system is perfect for Clustered Servers. We don't need to use any other 3rd party tool to sync files between clustered web servers. If you can improve sync settings and log files, Mesh will be incredible.
3) Web-based Notepad support for Live Desktop. I want to modify my txt files on Live Desktop.
4) File links to share with friends. I can be able to share my files with my friends. That can be direct link or "Share with Email" feature to send small files with Email.
And It works perfect with Windows 7 RTM x64. Thanks to Mesh Team.

I want members of a Live Group to be able to run an instance of a Live Mesh Application that all members of the group share.
Right now there isn't even a mechanism that I can find to "add an application" to a Live Group (ala Facebook applications). The best I can do is put a URL in a discussion forum and tell folks to click it.
It seems to me to make perferct sense to marry Live Mesh Applications to Live Groups (because the Group would be those people with whom you would want to share data for that instance of the application).
The other issue I have as an ISV is that I need to charge for my applications. So at some point in the process of sharing an instance of an application there has to be a method for the user to pay for the use of that instance.Monday, August 17, 2009 4:19 PM -

Hi,
I also have an iPhone and would like to be able to add it to my mesh as a device. I would like the iphone live mesh client to be able to do the following:
1. For photos and Videos, I would like to see the Live mesh client setup a new Photo Album in the iPhone's Photo Albums for each folder of photos I setup to sync from my mesh to the iphone. In this manner, new photos would get synced from my mesh to the iPhone. In addition the Live Mesh iPhone client would need to be able to sync the contents of any iPhone photo albums to my mesh as a new folder and the Live Mesh iPhone client would need to give me the option to select or deselect which iPhone Photo Albums to sync. I would code the Live Mesh iPhone client to either convert incompatible formats or only allow compatible formats to sync.
2. For Music, I would like to see the same basic functionality, to sync only compatible formats (mp3) along with Artist, coverart and playlists (some of this might need conversion), directly into the iPod application built into the device. I would also like to be able to sync the same content back to my mesh.
3. For text files, I would like the Live Mesh iPhone client to sync text, simple rtf and html formated text into the iPhone's Notes application. Each file should show up as a new entry in the application. Notes should be sync'd back to my mesh to a default folder called iPhone Notes (I should be able to rename this folder and it should still sync the content after renaming it). Obviously as the Notes application only a single format, conversion of formatted text would be needed.
4. For the Calendar, I should be able to save appointments in .ics format to a folder in my mesh. When sync'd to the Live Mesh iPhone client, these should get added as appointments to the iPhone Calendar application, changes and updates to existing appiontments should also be sync'd, the Live Mesh client on my desktop should be able to access my Outlook client and read my Calendar to automatically take the current weeks appointments and drop them in this forlder in ics format to sync.
5. For Contacts, I would like the same functionality as for Calendar, basically for Live mesh to be a conduit between my address book and the contacts application in the iPhone.
I am not actually interested in the remote desktop functionality of Live Mesh for this, I think that while some people would think it was nice, I would not want to use such a small screen to connect to another device in my mesh. In addition, I have no desire to be able to remotely connect into the I-phone and that would probably break some of the rules for the iPhone set by apple.
Right now I have to use Google services to sync Calendar info to my iPhone and I would prefer not to have them data mine my appointments.
Finally, an Live Mesh iPhone client would be a big deal and very good press for Microsoft, yes I know you would prefer I used a Windows Mobile device, but unfortunately there isn't one yet that can compare to the iPhone.Wednesday, August 19, 2009 3:31 PM -
I think Live Mesh could works with portable devices. A Portable Live Mesh Version would be perfect to sync your files wherever you are only using a pen drive. Obviusly I know I can do that using live desktop, but I'd prefer a little app in my pen drive to do this job fastly.
Thanks

I guess it would be great for all of us, who work on private computers but also on corporate PCs where Live Mesh is not allowed. Downloading a single file, editing it and uploading it is not what I would call easy or convenient. And it's unsecure, of course. Microsoft Office Live would fill the gap.

There have been plenty of suggestions to some how integrate live mesh with skydrive, which is something I definitely support. But at the bare minimum I would like to see an option to open office files accessed through the live desktop with the office web apps. This would eliminate the need to transfer a file to skydrive just to be able to edit it on the go. I added a suggestion for this on connect.

HIYA
FEATURE REQUEST!!!!!!!!
ITS ALL NICE AND EASY TO SYNC BETWEEN TWO COMPUTERS THAT YOU HAVE ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS ON
BUT
WHAT ABOUT US COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WHO WANT TO SYNC THEIR WORK BETWEEN HOME AND SCHOOL DRIVES...
EVEN IF IT WORKS BY SOME STRANGE WAY, ITS NOT 100% FLEXIBLE, PERHAPS LIVE MESH SHOULD COLLABORATE WITH SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT UK LIKE GOOGLE IS DOING.
THIS YEAR WE SWITCHED OVER TO GOOGLE COMPLETELY AT OUR UNIVERSITY INCLUDING GOOGLEDOCS AND THE WHOLE LOT BUT ITS RUBBISH...
PROBABLY WE SHOULD BE PRIORITY AS WE ARE THE NEXT GENERATION LIVE MESH DEVELOPERS TO BE , WELL AT LEAST I AM STUDYING JAVA...
THANKS FOR READING!!!!!!!

I don't know, but I would doubt it since that's a legacy platform.

well... a couple of things...
an option to do undo delete, because maybe i deleted accidentally from one computer (this occurs a lot since my 5 years old daughter uses my pc for playing in internet), but i dont want to delete it.
an option to display the files deleted in the folder (currently it only shows x files deleted, right now its not usefull at all)
an option to sync a pc but without adding it to the list... i sync sometimes from public pcs and i must to delete the association, the other day i use 5 minutes live desktop and i have like 25 supposedly pc's synced and the truth is that only 2 pcs and one WM phone must to be on that list.
+1 to the portable version! :D
greetings and keep the good work!

Personally I like sync MUCH better than mesh because it is just cleaner. That stupid mesh side bar just annoys me. I also dont like how mesh creates a "Live Mesh Folders" folder in my doc that looks totally different from the rest of the windows scheme. I also hate the contex menus mesh creates and would like a way to disable them. To me mesh just looks out of place. on my machine it violates to many standard windows UI constructs. As such mesh usually gets uninstalled when I decide its time to go back to live sync.Wednesday, January 6, 2010 9:35 PM

As a guy that's used both, I have to go with Live Mesh. It's much more flexible with the amount of files and folders you can sync. The 20 folder limit in Live Sync is just horrible, how can you organize stuff without making folders?
Also having the cloud storage and remote desktop is a fantastic feature. Not to mention that I find Mesh has been more reliable at syncing files than Sync. I must admit I'm not a big fan of that extra bar along the side of explorer when you browse a Mesh folder, but I don't mind the different Mesh Icon's in explorer to distinguish it as a Mesh folder.
The options for syncing in Mesh work great, including the option to sync to the cloud or not, and also sharing folders with other Live users is a great feature, especially utilizing the cloud for this.Wednesday, February 3, 2010 6:38 PM -

I would like the ability to sync to a single mesh folder from different users on the same computer without having to add a new device for each user.
See the last post in this link for further detail. http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/LiveMesh/thread/33348102-2681-4e0d-bb8a-5dbb0578dde9
Thank you.

It works great for me! Sync is fast and I can connect my PCs at home and at work with ease. Saves me a lot of work.

TAKE REMOTE CONTROL OUT OF THE FEATURE LIST... IT SUCKS AND IS NOT USABLE. MAKES THE WHOLE CONCEPT/ABILITY OF LIVE MESH LOOK LIKE A JOKE
No, I think remote control would be nice.Tuesday, August 10, 2010 2:36 AM -
Please take any discussion of features for the Live Sync beta to the Sync forum at http://windowslivehelp.com
I'm locking this thread.
