Well actually, YES, it did work. It worked the first time I did it when I created the dual boot with XP.
It also worked this time. The problem appears to have been with a glitch in Vista SP1. I uninstalled SP1 and activation worked fine.
I also just finished using the same method of clean install on another machine - it went flawlessly installing with Vista SP1 DVD.
Thanks for your attempt to assist, it is appeciated even though it was somewhat less than adequate.

Please explain if you have an "upgrade" or "full version" license for Vista Business. How did you perform the "clean install"?

Version is UPGRADE. Originally had a dual boot with XP. When I was satisfied that Vista was OK, I re-installed clean by reformat of the drive - not entering a product key when installing. Then reinstalling as an upgrade and entering the product key. (all per: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?&lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup&p=1&tid=c2e2a2bd-c0ed-4c78-ae89-5eb74dcf2be7&mid=c2e2a2bd-c0ed-4c78-ae89-5eb74dcf2be7 )Saturday, June 14, 2008 8:07 PM

Despite what you read in some newsgroups or forums, the installation method you used is not supported by Microsoft. You'll either have to purchase a "Full Version" license for Vista Business and change the product key, or else reformat the hard drive, reinstall Windows XP, then perform an upgrade or a "custom installation" for a clean install.Saturday, June 14, 2008 8:18 PMModerator

Uhhh, I beg to differ - the method comes from MS.Saturday, June 14, 2008 9:26 PM
