  • The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MSDN account.

Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.

You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

You may be able to get a complimentary copy of the OS from Microsoft - fill in the Counterfeit report here...

  • Thanks,

I am not an MDSN subscriber and had bought the computer from an ebay shop over a year ago. I hadn't had any problems until yesterday and don't want anymore so I completed the counterfeit report and will hope it can be replaced.  As far as I had been aware until now everything was legit. I am surprised that this can come to light so long after the start of using. I hope it gets resolved..

  • Is there a COA sticker on the case of the machine?

Have you made a complaint to the vendor and to eBay?

  • I can't find a COA sticker. I have contacted the vendor and will complain to eBay.

Do you think microsoft will replace my copy of windows in this case?

    Tuesday, February 5, 2013 2:51 PM
  • I suspect not, because of it being pre-installed.

Historically, all free replacements that I've heard of have been for 'retail' copies of Windows, where the applicant has had to send in the disks and packaging together with the appropriate paperwork.

  • Hmmmm, I am sending back the windows recovery disks sent with th PC and the relevant paperwork and will hope for the best.

Presuming they dont replace this will I have to buy a legitimate copy of windows?

  • Afraid so - MS are usually pretty quick to respond one way or the other, and your system won't get any less usable than it already is (unless the problem extends over 30 days, and you have MSE installed), so hang fire, and start saving :)

  • Well that seems to be the way today is going! I use MSE, can you suggest a good free replacment? If I do a windows backup will I be able to use it for the legitimised windows?

    Thanks for your help

  • MSE should be on a 30-day countdown now - how many days does it have left?

Should it come to it, simply uninstall MSE on the last day, and install Avast free (one of the best of the freebies).

Once/if MS agree to a replacement, you should be able to simply swap in the new Key from the Get Genuine Kit, and activate that - no hassle :)

Likewise, if you purchase a Full Retail package (from a reputable dealer!) of Windows 7 Home Premium, swap in the Key and you're away. If you can't get hold of the full retail Win7, you may be able to force an upgrade install using a Full Retail package for Windows 8 Pro. (I haven't tried it - you may want to ask if it's possible in the Answers/Community forums)
