Key Changer - Error Out of disk space. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I decided to upgrade my computer with new motherboard, cpu, ram, gpu, etc.

Thought I would use my old XP Pro disk...

Installed windows XP pro only to find out the disk I have is for my brothers computer (Is a OEM copy from newegg.com), and I can't find the key or the disk for my copy (I have the book though, wish they would put it in the book...).

So I go to the genuine windows thing when I went to update windows.

Bought the windows XP Pro, received new CD Key.

I try the Key Update Tool and it gives me the error:

The application has encountered a disk-write error while updating system components. The system may be low on disk space. Please check available disk space. [Error: 0x800402c9].

My harddrive is a new 750gb hard drive, with 100 gb partitioned for windows. So I have plenty of disk space.

What do I do? Do I have to wait until I receive the disk (they say around two weeks) before I can activate, by reinstalling it from the new disk? Will that work? If I had known it would be this much of a pain I would just driven down to staples and bought a copy instead of waiting two weeks for the disk....

    Please help.

  • The WGA Kit product key is for a "full retail version" of Windows XP and will not work with an OEM CD.  You'll need to wait for the new CD to arrive.

    JoshBowers,

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.

    Thank you,

  • Hello Josh,

What do I do? Do I have to wait until I receive the disk (they say around two weeks) before I can activate, by reinstalling it from the new disk?

You could also try reinstalling XP from the OEM disk and use the new Product key during install.

  • So I would use my brothers disk, but use my key? Would that work? I thought each disk had a pre-assigned key, which is why I can't just use the key I was sent?
