Windows Vista Home Premium: "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message RRS feed

  • Question

  • Have a ZT PC from Costco that came with Windows Vista Home Premium.  The motherboard died, and I replaced it (and also replaced the boot drive).  The replacement board was fully compatible with my CPU, memory, etc. -- no problems there.  I then used the System Restore discs to (re)install the Vista version that come with the PC on the new boot drive.  Everything worked fine ... including initial validation of the Windows Vista installation, and a slew of Vista updates/service packs, etc. to bring the OS into the present (April 2011).  I installed all the software that had been on the PC before the motherboard went south.  Everything seemed to be cruising along with no problems whatsoever.  I was a happy camper.

have been away from the PC for a week or so, and just logged in this evening.  I'm now getting a message whenever I log in that says that Windows Vista (Build 6002) on the PC is not genuine.  Very odd ... all of a sudden? ... and even after I went through a validation/activation immediately after installing the OS from the System Restore discs?  I followed the MS Answer link that was listed in one of the popup windows that the "not genuine / invalid license" message led me to ... so here I am.  The MS Genuine Advantage Diagnostic tool (1.9.0027.0) report follows.  --Thanks very much, Steve

Your problem is that you have installed an OEM_SLP copy of Windows into a machine with a Retail motherboard. You need to use a RETAIL Key to activate it.

  • NEVER MIND ... I FIGURED OUT WHAT WAS WRONG after reading several more related posts.

I apparently did NOT activate the OS after installation ... and it went into a grace period.  When the grace period ended, the "not genuine/invalid license" warnings began.  All I had to do was enter my license key code and truly validate the license.

Sorry to have raised a false alarm.  I apologize.  --Steve
