Windows not genuine - after using it for months RRS feed

  • Question

  • After using my Windows Vista Home Premium 2007, 32 bit, with Service Pack 2 since Sept 2011 - during December 2011 I started to get a message on the bottom right corner of my desktop saying that "this copy of windows is not genuine", and now Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) has been disabled. The desktop has also turned black. Although I can change it, it will revert to black.

As requested in response to other similar posts, I have downloaded the MGA Diagnostic Tool, and the report follows.

First download and install Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com) -  this will tell you your Keys for both Office and Windows – make a permanent note of them!

It looks as is your Licensing Store is corrupt
Please try the below steps to recreate the Store with the correct data.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate.
Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results

  • Thanks for the tip about Belarc Advisor tool, it confirmed that I had the correct Key.

I did as you suggested.  When I restarted for the second time, the computer suggested I insert the CD, but I do not have it.

However, everything seems to be working, although the desktop is still black, and I am still getting the message that "this copy of windows is not genuine".

Thanks for the tip about Belarc Advisor tool, it confirmed that I had the correct Key.

I did as you suggested.  When I restarted for the second time, the computer suggested I insert the CD, but I do not have it.

However, everything seems to be working, although the desktop is still black, and I am still getting the message that "this copy of windows is not genuine".

OK – I can now see what the problem is.

Your motherboard appears to be a retail one – which implies that you replaced it out of warranty. This invalidates the original OEM License.
Unfortunately, if this is the case, there’s little we can do here, as you would need to purchase a new Full Retail license for Windows.
If the machine was repaired under warranty, then you can try phone activation and explain the circumstances to the activation rep, who can reset the activation.

    telephone activation.
    Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI 4
    and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions - but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you.
