Got a small problem. Windows small business server 2008 uses WUS to pump out automatic updates and on the client they are Greyed out. Problem is every time the client boots, they are labeled @ risk due to "Automatic updates not being on"

A customer using SBS 2003R2 reported that there was an incorrectly set GPO key that he was able to fix per the instructions below. It may work for you, too.
They GPO key is changed thus...
· (SBS2003)Start | Administrative Tools | Group Policy Management
· Expand... <your forest> | Domains | <your domain> | Group Policy Objects
· Right click and Edit the following object... Small Business Server Update Services Common Settings Policies
· Expand the new window that opens when you click on Edit (above step)... Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Update
· Double-click... Configure Automatic Updates, and change settings to: Enabled, 4 (Auto download and schedule the install), suitable day/time values
· Save settings. PROCESS COMPLETED.

I assume that you are not using OneCare for server with a client license pack for the PCs in the environment. If you were, the client would be satisifed that updates were being handled by the SBS environment, to the best of my knowledge.
If your PCs are using the client install with retail licensing, there is no solution other than enabling AU on the PCs, which isn't acceptable in your case.

Ok... maybe i'm missing something here.
Small business server 2008 is using the trial it came with which is one care for server
My client subscribed for a site license. There was no client to download given to them or linked after signing.
So we downloaded the retail and used there Windows live id which activated each one and linked them to the server. Every client is listed in the server and manageable. but...
when they log on it says there at risk do to no auto updates.
This is because 2008 (From what i can gather) SBS has a policy that makes all updates come through it and greys them out for the server.
So the licensing #1 is not retail. It is the site license you provide for small businesses.

They got the site license there. Is there a seperate client install anywhere i'm missing?
There live ID also activates all of them including the server.
I hope i'm a little clearer with this message. Everything functions fine but it annoys them to see there Live one care listed at risk everytime they boot.Thursday, December 18, 2008 2:23 PM -
You've clarified very well.
You have the correct licensing for the clients that are joined to the server and managed from the server as long as you used the LiveID for that site license for all of the client PCs.
I don't have experience with OneCare for Server, but I believe that some things are supposed to happen differently on the client when it is activated with the site license LiveID. So, it would appear that it is working as it should *except* that you are seeing a problem that also affects the retail client for unexplained reasons.
I've had it happen a few times within the last few days when rebooting my Vista machines. OneCare loads up and is green and moments into the process it turns red and displays a warning that there is an action to take and advises me to open OneCare to see what that action is. Upon opening OneCare, it warns that AU is off, when it is in fact on - verified by going to Control Panel/Automatic Updates. The solution in each of the cases that I've encountered is to click the button that OneCare provides to turn on AU, which sets it back to green. I believe that it is a service/database issue in OneCare and probably a bug. I also think it happens in Vista more often than XP.
When it happens on your client PCs, are you getting the prompt on the client to open OneCare? Is there a button to enable AU within OneCare in the actions to take banner? Can that button be clicked?
