Unfortunately, your installation of Windows 7 is NOT valid - your PC was built well before the release of Win 7, and could not possibly have shipped with it. OEM_SLP license for Windows are ONLY available to manufacturers, and not to the public - and the Windows 7 licenses were release in August 2009 - your PC was built around August 2008.
You need to either purchase a Retail license for Windows 7, or revert back to the original operating system using the manufacturer's recovery system.

Noel, thanks for this. I needed to reinstall my OS a couple of months ago and contacted HP to send me some restore disks, i was using Vista at the time. They sent me Windows 7 instead. I installed it and when it worked i thought no more of it. They did not give me licence number when the disks arrived. i will contact them direct to get a product key.
Many thanks

They have given you the wrong set of disks - and they will NOT be able to give you the correct Key, unless you are able to update your BIOS to the proper Win7 one for your machine (and even then it will still be non-genuine).They stuffed it up - force them to correct the problem.

Do you suggest that i get HP to send me out some replacement recovery disks for Vista and then reinstall everything again, or is there another way? Is there any way i can keep windows 7 without having to buypurchase a retail licence?
thanks again. this post should be my last on this topic. your support has been much appreciated.

Basically, no - there's no way around it.the options are:1)Back up your data to external storage and insist that HP fix it properly2) Purchase a Retail Win 7 Home Basic and use the Key from that to activate the current install3)Do an upgrade install with whatever version of Win7 you fancy, with a Full Retail pack and Key (I think that'll work - but back up your data first!)
