After 22 hours it has only processed 8.7 %, Is this typical?

22 hours for 8.7% of how many TB? 100? Then it's fast. 2? Then it's very slow.

Of course this also depends whether we are even talking about a hard drive… maybe you have a USB stick to encrypt. So be more specific, please :-)
