The presence of the COA for Windows 2000 Professional indicates that the computer came with an OEM license for Windows 2000 Professional and is still licensed to run Windows 2000 Professional.

This web page http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradepaths.mspx shows that you can upgrade from Windows 2000 Professional to Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate.

However, in order to actually run the installation of Vista, you have to have Windows 2000 Professional already installed on the laptop.  See this MS KB article for step by step instructions:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918884

The issue at hand, then, is to acquire and install a copy of Windows 2000 Professional so that you can install Vista Upgrade. You already have a legal Product Key and License for W2K Pro, but in order to use the W2K Pro Product Key printed on the COA, you will need to acquire an OEM CD for W2K Pro.  If you know someone who works in a medium-to -large sized business, they should be able to come up with a copy of W2K Pro OEM for you to use.  Or ask friends and relatives.  You can also call Dell customer support and ask to purchase one, but since W2K Pro is an older OS, I would not expect Dell to be able to accommodate your request.

  • Contact the manufacturer of the laptop and ask if theycan send you the original Windows XP restore or recovery CD, install it and then upgrade to Windows Vista.

  • If your laptop is running a non-genuine copy of Windows XP, then you'll need to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows Vista and perform a "clean install".

  • Tinychic,

Please look on the bottom of the laptop and report back with answers:

    1.  Is there a Certificate of Authenticity for Windows?  If so, what version and edition of Windows?  (PS--Don't post the product key.)

    2.  What is the make and model number of the laptop?
