Windows 7 build 7601 not genuine, black screen, only boots in safe mode RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, I recently upgraded my hard drive in my laptop to SSD. I imaged the old system to the new hard drive. It seems to want to work, but in normal mode, I can sign in but it "freezes" at a black screen that just states "Windows 7 build 7601 not genuine". I can not see anything or do anything else. I can boot into safe mode. I am hoping that this is just an issue where I need to activate again without starting over from scratch, but I can't seem to get to an option to even attempt to validate/activate my license.

Can anyone tell me if the activation is the issue, or guide me into some other possible fix. Here is the report. TIA

  • The black desktop is normal for a Non-Genuine issue, but the freezing is not.

The Diagnostic Reports suggests that Windows 7's Licensing Store (or it's data) is corrupt or 'messed up' in some way.  I have provided steps for you to try below, but Please Note, I have not tested the steps in Safe Mode, so can not be sure they will work or that the steps would be the same while in safe mode.

In addition, while the below steps may resolve the Licensing Store issue, I have no idea what is causing the freezing.  It is possible the freezing will stop once the Licensing Store issue is resolved, but I feel that is unlikely.

    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc   (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

    Hope that helps,

Does not work in safe mode. Cannot start or stop the SPPsvc. Also Slui cannot be used in safe mode.
