Restore a directory structure RRS feed

  • Question

  • I mistakenly deleted a directory structure from my hard disk.  Fortunately I backed it up with OneCare.  I would like to restore the entire directory structure from the last backup.  I am not sure how to do this.  Can someone help?

    Thanks in advance,

  • Tim, your degree of “good fortune” will depend on what types of directories were lost. The new OneCare backup saves files by type rather than location, and so it may not be able to totally restore your directories on its own.

If the directories in question contained only data files, and these files were not located in the Program Files directory, then you should be able to simply restore them with the “Restore all missing files” option: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944171/en-us

If the directories were program directories, and they were not located in the Program Files directory, then you need to be aware that the backup will not include the program files, such as the executable (.exe) and dynamic link library (.dll) files. The assumption made by the new version of the backup is that you will be able to restore the missing program files by reinstalling the program that created them, or restore missing system files by reinstalling the operating system.

The best way to proceed in this case would therefore probably be to reinstall the program(s) that created the directories in question, update the program(s), and then selectively restore the backup files to the re-created directories with the “Restore all missing files” option.

If the missing directories were program directories that were located in the Program Files directory (the default location for program directories), then many types of data files might also not have been backed up, and you might have to use a file-recovery program to retrieve anything valuable. These files would need to be copied to a location outside of the Program Files directory in order to be included in subsequent backups: http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2980015&SiteID=2
