Windows Home Server - Motherboard RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am currently running HP Media Smart Server.   I am thinking about building a custom Windows Home Server, and I was wondering do I need to use a server motherboard?, or just a better quality ATX motherboard? Also, How do I know if a motherboard has Windows Home Server drivers available?

  • I need to use a server motherboard?,

    No.

or just a better quality ATX motherboard?

Just a motherboard from a well known vendor that suits you (enough SATA connections, 1 GB network ; onboard Video .. just in case you need to hook a monitor to it etc.
Be sure it's a 64 bit one since the next WHS will be 64 bit only.

Also, How do I know if a motherboard has Windows Home Server drivers available?

Check the vendors website. For WHS (V1) ==> Windows Server 2003
For the next version (currentently named Vail) ==> Server 2008 R2
