Exclude folders from server backup ? Span backup drives ?

Question
-
I've setup 3x 500GB external drives to back up the server and data. Backing up the user files, music, and photos fits just fine on one drive but videos is a problem. There's just over a TB of data. If I could exclude some folders I could like get it to fit on 2 drives but how do I (1) exclude folders from the backup and (2) span the videos directory across more than 1 HD ? One of the external enclosures holds 2 drives so as plan B I could select to mount it as 1 large drive (hardware option) but the issue still remains of excluding folders.Monday, November 24, 2008 4:39 PM

You can exclude entire shares, but not individual folders. And the Server Backup tool does not, unfortunately, have the ability to span a single backup across multiple external drives. For users with extremely large shares, options might be splitting a share up into two (if that fits with your media storage/access methods of choice), or installing something such as robocopy to back up the large share piecemeal. Or purchasing an external enclosure that fitx multiple drives and spans them internally into a single apparent drive for the host OS.

What I did was configure 2 hard drives to show as one with my external drive and moved folders I didn't want to backup to a new Videos folder called Videos2 (creative I know). Haven't tried a backup yet but this should do the trick. Thanks.Tuesday, November 25, 2008 10:13 PM

Please be careful when spanning multiple drives that way. Some enclosures use disk configurations that don't allow you to remove a single drive and recover files manually; if any drive fails you lose the data on all the drives.
