  • Wasim.sh,

In your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT) report it shows the error code "Online Validation Code: 0x80070426". This means that the Software Licensing Service has stopped. Windows Vista uses this service to check itself and confirm it is Genuine. When the service is stopped, Windows Vista is unable to confirm its own Genuine status and may show Genuine or Non-Genuine. The fact that the Service has stopped is also, most likely, the cause of other issues you may be experiencing (such as not having access to the Control Panel).

Please try the first set of steps and if it does not resolve the issue, move on to the next set.

The first sets of steps are how to set the Software Licensing Service to start at each Windows Vista Start-up.

    1. Click Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  services.msc

    2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard

    3. The Services window should now open

    4. Scroll down to Software Licensing, then right-click on it and select Properties

    5. Under the General tab, click Stop button.

    6. Set the Startup Type to Automatic, and then click Apply

    7. Next, under Service Status, click Start button.

    8. Last, restart your computer.

The second set of steps is the Manual steps to Force Start the Software Licensing Service. Once you type the net start slsvc command and hit Enter, if you receive any error, then, for some reason, Windows Vista is not processing the command correctly and the issue is larger than just a Software Licensing problem. In which case, I would suggest contacting Windows Vista support below: http://support.microsoft.com

If you have access to the Start button:

    1) Click Start button

    2) Type: cmd in the Start Search field

    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

If you do not have access to the Start button:

    1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser

    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3) Find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

Thank you for visiting the Genuine Advantage forum.

    Rick

  • i have done that , it starts for a few seconds then it stops again . do u have any ideas what might be the problem ?

  • For what it's worth, I'm seeing this exact problem.  It began occurring after a failed windows update.  My system seemed to recover properly after the failure, but now the licensing service functions (or rather, doesn't) exactly like it is described here.

I've filed a support request, but I wanted to subscribe to this thread in case another solution was found.

  • Wasim.sh and Crashless,

I have received your response and am looking into this further.

  • Wasim.sh and MAYBE Crashless (As I have not seen your Diagnostic Report),

I am told this may be related to malware, we are aware of the Software Licensing Service being a target.

What I would do is go to
http://safety.live.com and run a Complete Virus and Spyware Scan. Then, reboot when finish and re-try the instructions on my former post.

If you do this, please let me know how that goes.

I also need to add that PC Safety issues are considered out of scope for this forum, as well as outside of my area of expertise. The above may or may not resolve your issue.

Look forward to hearing from you,

    Rick

ps- Crashless, I am interested in knowing if you have an OEM System Builder license of Home Premium too....?

    Thnx .

  • Thanks so much for the ongoing help.

I'm currently running the complete virus scan at safety.live.com and it looks like it will be running all night, so I thought I would post an update. I should not that I was only able to run the scan after quickly hitting run after net start slsvc.  It gave me the same 0x80070426 error...

Yes, I am also running the OEM version of Vista Home Premium.

My Diagnostic Report is spotty - sometimes I'm able to get it to pass by running the start net slsvc, sometimes not.  When I ran it yesterday, my report was exactly like the OP's, today it fails.  I would restart right now, but the scan is running in the background.

Here is a copy of my currently failing Diagnostic Report:

  • CRashless:

It wont work because its missing the SLIC table, so you must change your Windows key to the one on your COA.
    Sunday, January 11, 2009 2:58 AM
  • That sounds like an interesting idea - how would I do that?

I _am_ curious as to how it would have been changed to something OTHER than the key on my COA.

  • Fun stuff.

Sensing things were getting worse, I used a restore point of a few days ago.  At one point, I thought I had this fixed when Windows installed an update.  Well, it appears that was just a security update, and it made things worse.

Now I've gotten the system back to where it will pass WGA, but still won't run the Control Panel, Windows Update, or my favorite - print.

motherboardlove - could the reason there is no SLIC table be because this system shipped with Windows XP, and now I'm running an OEM version of Vista?  I'm still very confused as to what that is.
