  • Did you get the opportunity to check out TechNet Library "Supported Migration Paths and Coexistence Scenarios" ?

  • If you are upgrading to R2 here is the list of documentation...

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E9F86F96-AA09-4DCA-9088-F64B4F01C703&displaylang=en

There is a R2 migration from 2005 document that details the differences from a normal build.

One of the main parts from an upgrade from 2005 is that you build out the edge server first, there are some updates you need but 2005 will work with a 2007 edge server in place of the proxy server.

    Hope this helps.

    Mike

Edit:  I should have mentioned as well... as Desmond mentioned, it's technically not an upgrade, you have to build out a new server and migrate the users

  • Hi

There are some mandatory updates on LCS 2005 SP1 (post SP1) before migrating to OCS, check Technet.
Take care also of the global settings location in AD (Technet too).

  • Before deploying any OCS components in the environment the LCS server must first be upgraded to SP1 (if not already) and the following hotfixes applied in the order they are listed.  If the patches are installed out-of-order than the LCS Front-End services may fail to restart.

    ·        Update for Live Communications Server 2005: KB911966

o   Apply this patch to the LCS 2005 Standard Edition server first.

o   It is required to remove all previously installed hotfixes for Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 before installing this update.  Read through the KB article for this patch very carefully as there are very specific instructions

    ·        Update for Live Communications Server 2005: KB921543

o   Apply this patch to the LCS 2005 Standard Edition server after hotfix 911966 is correct applied.

  • You'll also need to make sure that you have a certificate deployed to the LCS server an although TCP-based client communications will still be supported, the LCS server can only talk to the OCS server using MTLS, which requires a certificate.  All server-to-server communictions require certificates.

Also, there is at least one known coexsistence issue with one-way presence that you'll want to be aware of just in case:

  • Hi

    All the answers are good.
Per my opinion, you could learn about the migration from LCS2005 to OCS2007R2 refer to below links firstly:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd425356(office.13).aspx
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd819973(office.13).aspx
Or you could download the document from below link:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E9F86F96-AA09-4DCA-9088-F64B4F01C703&displaylang=en

And then you'll have a general and better comprehension about the migration course.

    Hope this helpful.
    Regards!

  • Thanks guys,

  • You need to first enable the LCS users for OCS.  Using the OCS Management console take a look at the "Earlier Server Version" folder in the console tree.  you should find your LCS pool listed there with the Users underneath it.  You can then select and 'Move' those accounts to the OCS pool to begin configuring them for OCS features.

On important note: Make sure that you do NOT enable Enhanced Presence until you simultaneously upgrade the end-user's workstation with the appropriate OC client.  Office Communicator 1.0 (for LCS 2005) doe not support users enabled for Enhanced Presence.  That setting is also irreversible.

Jeff, When i go in and do that, it doesn't give me the option to move it to the new OCS. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

  • Jeff,
One problem i see is that i don't have R2 installed. I have OCS 2007 x86. Does R2 have a x86 version? The only thing i see on MSDN is x64.
    Thanks!

  • There is no x86 version of OCS R2, it's 64-bit only, just as the pre-R2 release is 32-bit only.
