Setting up Server/User backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • My WHS 2011 server (running on a Proliant N40) has two RAID1 drives:

    1. 250Gb for system (C:) and some data (D:)
    2. 3Tb (F:) for the user data directories

Because of the size of the 2nd RAID1 array, I had to add it via the control panel. I'd hoped to use this to backup the server, but as soon as I define this drive as WHS backup space, it disappears as F: so I can't use it as data space.

Can I partition the 3Tb RAID1 drive, and use it for both backups and user data?

As things stand, I don't see any way to setup the backup function...

  • I didn't even have to delete the partition on my external USB drive; in fact, I didn't have to do anything to it.

Once I'd copied the content of the external USB drive to my internal data drive, and modified the share to point to the internal drive, then the Server Backup setup process was happy to offer the external USB drive as suitable space for the backups. After confirming (several times!) that this was really what I wanted to do, the setup completed with no problems at all. I realise that the original contant of the USB drive was lost in this process; I'd already taken a copy of the entire contents of the USB drive on my internal server data drive.

I suppose this is the answer to my problem... but it's surely bad form to nominate one of your own posts as the answer. So, if anyone else wants to earn some free kudos, just suggest something along the lines of my solution (above, in this POST).

  • Ha! I may have found an answer by myself.

I just added the 3Tb drives; prior to this I had a 1Tb USB drive attached. I've copied the data off that onto the 3Tb (RAID1) drives, so I can re-deploy the external USB 1Tb drive as Backup space. It's just a matter of reading up on how to delete the partition on it, so it gets recognised as backup candidate space.

  • Hi Steve,

You mentioned the Drive F disappeared once you backed up to it. I assume it is caused that you select it as a "Dedicate backup location". In order to protect backup, if you select Dedicate backup location, it will remove the drive letter.

Choose "Backup to a volume" will not remove the drive letter.
