What drive to install on? RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I am looking to build my first WHS using two 2TB drives.  I was wondering where I should install the server software.  Should I install to one large partition that will be part of the storage pool?  Should I create a small partition for WHS and install there or should I get a third small drive and install to boot from there?

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

  • When you install, Windows Home Server will choose a drive (normally the "first" drive the BIOS presents, assuming all drives are at least 80 GB in size) and partition it into a 20 GB SYS (C:) partition and DATA (D:) partition. All other drives will be formatted as a single partition (DATA, no drive letter) and added to the storage pool.

My recommendation is to just use the two large drives you have, and let Windows Home Server handle the details.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
