Suggestion: Restore previous functionality! RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I've got 2 suggestions, both of them existed in previous versions of Windows Mobile but not in version 6:

    1) Allow selection of which email account to use for invitations.  If you set an appointment in Calendar now, it sends invitations to the ActiveSync account - which means they don't get sent out until you sync, or not at all if you don't have Outlook set up as your primary email program.

    2) "Active Tasks" filter in the Tasks shouldn't show tasks that are not yet active - the whole point of having a starting date is to hide the task until it's time to do it - I don't need a to-do list that includes buying my mother a birthday present for her birthday 11 months away.

  • I reproduced your problem, and yes it is indeed seeing active task as all upcoming task when filter for active task.

However I am not able to look back at previous version if active task indeed means the tasks that have started according to the date.

I suggest putting your task in order according to start Date for now.

Your issue is noted and trust me the developers are reading along

  • I bumped into the same trouble, tried this workaround:

Right click on the arrangement by criteria, select "custom" , click "filter" button, go to "advanced" tab, set this rule: field name = start date; condition = on or before; value = today.

Finally it worked for me. It works like a kind of the "active tasks" filter available on Outlook versions previous to 2007.

    Hope it works for you.

Let's be clear here.  The issue is with the Tasks application on Windows Mobile 6.  The application's implementation of the "Active Task" filter does not match to the associated Active Task statistics shown in the Today screen plug-in also provided in Windows Mobile 6.    This was a change made in Windows Mobile 6 from Windows Mobile 5 (in which both the application and the Today plug-in matched and was much more useful functionality).

Your suggested workaround does not help Windows Mobile 6 regain the useful functionality lost from Windows Mobile 5.

Had I known Windows Mobile 6 would be WORSE than previous versions, I would have considered a Palm PDA.  Maybe you should include on the "features" page all the things that used to work that no longer do.

  • It's not worse, it is better in other ways. It's just that you are missing those two items. As I said , we'll take this as a point of interest

  • Active task filter is also broken in outlook 2007. Did i mention that I use my $500 phone and $4,000 laptop for tasks more than anything else and that the filter did work until I was informed that updates where installed. I wish I could remove the updates.

Anyway I was just wondering if there is going to be a fix in the next few days or should I go to an Apple store and throw away my microsoft products?

After which updates and on what device or PC did you start to get problems.

  • My computer is running XP pro and the updates that where installed around the time that i ran into this problem are:

    1. Office 2007 SP1

    2. Update for Outlook 2003 (KB943649) OLKINTL    "I don't even have outlook 2003 installed"

    3. Security Updates (KB941568) (KB937894) (KB941569) (KB942763) (KB944653) (KB943485) (KB941644)

    4. All .NET Framework versions updates and service packs

Anyway I had December off so any update released around that time is a suspect. As for my phone it's a HTC Mogul "Sprint" with:

    ROM version:        2.17.651.0

    ROM date:           11/18/07

    Radio version:       1.47.01

    Protocol version:   ACAAAAM-4070

    Hardware version:  0003

    PRL version:         60610

    PRI version:          1.24_003

    Browser version:    MSIE 6.0

    Model No.:            TITA100

I'm trying to find an older firmware for my phone, but i'm not having any luck. Also I just noticed that I have a task that was due on the 17 and right now it is the 19 but the today screen task thingy says 4 active tasks. it should say 4 active tasks 1 overdue task and 1 task due today. Scratch that it shows overdue and due today "I re-installed the firmware and forgot to set the options for the today screen". However I noticed that if you have the active tasks filter on it will not show overdue tasks in the list but my task that starts on 2/20/2008 still shows up.

So anyway it looks like someone messed with the code for the active task filter so now the logic is along the lines of:

if due date is < todays date

    then do not list

when it should be setup more like this:

if start date is > todays date

    then do not list

I'm tired of typing so if you need more info let me know.

  • Did you try to go to the today screen task settings?

Start->settings->today->highlight Task and the options.. button will be activated.->options..->

Hre you can get your display settings configured.:

    Options are

    • Display number of "High Priotity Task"
    • Display number of "Task due Today"
    • Display number of "Overdue Tasks"

Let us know if this solved your problem. If not we probably have to recommend you a third party software like

    TodayAgenda (free) http://tiews.info/index.php?show=software%2Ftodayagenda or http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1475

    or PocketBreeze $ 19.95

    or others like SPBsoftwarehouse

  • If you read my post carefully you will see that I already did that and that part worked. I will do a step-by-step to reproduse my problem.

    1.  from today screen tap on tasks

    2.  now tap Menu->New task

    3.  type a name for your task and enter a start date and due date.

    4.  now that you know how to enter a task enter these tasks "replace day1 with todays date, day2 with tommarrows date....."

    task1, start date "day1", due date "day5"

    task2, start date "day1", due date "day1"

    task3, "same as task2"

    task4, "same as task2"

    task5, "same as task2"

    task6, start date "day2", due date "day2"

    task7, "same as task6"

    task8, "same as task6"

    task9, "same as task6"

    task10, "same as task6"

    task11, start date "day3", due date "day3"

    task12, "same as task11"

    task13, "same as task11"

    task14, "same as task11"

    task15, "same as task11"

    task16, start date "day4", due date "day4"

    task17, "same as task16"

    task18, "same as task16"

    task19, "same as task16"

    task20, "same as task16"

    task21, start date "day5", due date "day5"

    task22, "same as task21"

Now tap menu->Filter->Active tasks.  Why? Because you want to see the tasks that you should be working on but not the ones that have not started yet. As far back as I can remember outlook and my phone would show tasks1-5, but now it still shows tasks1-22.

Go to the "Today screen". Notice how it says "5 Active tasks"? Tap on tasks. Notice how even though it knows there are 5 active tasks and you have the filter set to show you only active task all 22 tasks show up.

Now tap Menu->Sort By->Due Date.  Why? Because in reality my task list is not as nice and neat as the one above. I might have 30+ tasks that are due in a week+ but are large enough that I need to be working on them whenever I have time. At the same time I might have as many as 50 tasks that start and are due at varying times during the week. If i sort using any other filter tasks that are due today might show up after the 30+ that are due next week. I don't know about you but I am not going to scroll through 80 tasks looking at due dates to figure out what I need to do. Now if you look task1 will show up near the end of the list after all of the tasks that you don't even need to start yet. When in reality it should be 5th in a list of 5 tasks, not 20th in a list of 22.

What I am asking for was in Outlook 2003, Outlook2007, WM5, and WM6, but now they are gone. As for my phone I realize that they may not let you install updates on it. However they plan on releasing a new firmware some time in the next 4 months so if you guys fix what you broke and send them the new SDK before they release the final firmware I wont have to install software to restore previous functionality.

One last thing, Overdue tasks do show up in the list. I was just too sleepy and pissed to notice last night.

    Edit:

I just realized that I had said:

"So anyway it looks like someone messed with the code for the active task filter so now the logic is along the lines of:

if due date is < todays date

    then do not list

when it should be setup more like this:

if start date is > todays date

    then do not list"

when in reality the only thing that the active task filter removes are completed tasks so.....

if start date is > todays date

    then do not list

Is not working correctly or incorrectly.

Since this is also broken in Outlook 2007 i'm guessing that "Office 2007 SP1" is what caused all the troubles. That is assuming that the WM6 SDK Includes some code from Outlook 2007. If this is the case please fix Outlook 2007, re-build the WM6 SDK, and get it sent to sprint before they finish the next firmware.

  • This is also a MAJOR concern for me. I upgraded to a phone with WM6 from a phone with WM5 and this is almost a dealbreaker. Many times I put in a quick task without a start or due date and it gets lost at the end of my pages and pages of tasks I have put in for the year. In tha past they would just be at the end of my active list.

    Monday, January 21, 2008 5:03 PM
  • This is standard since you have no date attached to the task. This will be on the bottom of your list

  • Yes this is standard to have them at the end of the list BUT before if I had the active task filter on they would be at the end of the list that was ACTIVE THAT DAY not the whole year. Also, my daily tasks would then disappear until the next day when I checked it off. Now it just moves lower, but stays on the screen depending on how many tasks are sorted ahead of it.

  • Thanks for posting your comments Bruce.  I will tell you that the developers of the Windows Mobile Platform DO read this the items in the suggestion box so your comments will have an impact.  Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.

  • I see others have elaborated for me, but let me give another shorter example - I put in "Buy birthday gift for mom" as a task repeating every 1 year.  It "begins" 1 week before her birthday and is "due" on her birthday.  Let's assume this is my only task.

In previous versions of Windows Mobile, if the "Active Tasks" filter was selected, this wouldn't appear on my to-do list until 1 week before her birthday.  But starting with Windows Mobile 6, it appears the instant I check it as being completed the year before.  (ie, I just bought my mother her 2008 present and clicked the checkbox, but my to-do list still has it as an active task since it just activated the 2009 instance of the task)

WM6 still filters correctly in one place - on the Today screen.  It would tell me in the example above that I have no active tasks.  But back to the real world where I have hundreds of tasks, when the today screen reports having active tasks, I click on that and have to search through all future tasks to find the correct one.

This change in functionality makes the "begin date"field and "Active Tasks" filter completely pointless.

    Thanks!

  • All right, it has been another month of putting up with this Active Task bug.  This same bug has been mentioned in multiple forums on this site and in multiple sites across the internet since Oct 2007.

Are we any closer to a fix?!?

What steps should end users take to help move this along.  Should I be contacting my device manufacturer (Samsung)?  Should I be contacting my service provider (Verizon)?

This is really a Microsoft issue.

    Please provide a fix!

  • Yep, need to fix this.

My wife is not pleased with her broken christmas present!

  • Payback time.  I'm up for a contract renewal on my cell phone, and I want to get a smartphone, to combine my PDA and cell phone into one (to reduce the already impressive bulge in my pants).  If these bugs aren't fixed in WM6.5, I'm getting a blackberry.  Anyone have a 6.5 device who can comment on whether the 2 functionalities I mentioned in this article are restored?

    They were:
    1. Filtering out tasks with future start dates (ie, pre-WM6 "Active Tasks" behavior)
    2. Selecting what email account to use to send out meeting invitations

If MS is wondering why they're losing market share - let me give you advice: Stop immitating Apple's worst features, and start fixing bugs and improving functionality pertinent to the professionals who use your products.  Let apple market their toys to kids.  You make solid products for adults.

  • I am also considering moving away from WM...
This simple fix has been on hold since 2007... It has been detailed inside out on several forums...  I really feel we are being kept hostage of this feature, and that our voices and suggestions are being totally ignored.
