GREAT POTENTIAL... but the terminology is utterly hopeless.... RRS feed

  • Question

  • First... thank you Microsoft... This could be and hopefully will be a great program.
However... I have to say.. the terminology is like a twisty little maze.
In the notifier:  The "NEW FOLDER..." or "ADD EXISTING FOLDER..." is impossible to know whether I'm CREATING a new folder or SYNCING a new folder or whether it's on my Computer or in my MESH or ????

In the help file under "Sync a folder with your computer" it says
    :
Synchronize a folder already in your mesh with your Mac
    1. Once you've added your Mac to your mesh, open the notifier, then click the name of the folder you want to synchronize. Its folder icon will appear fadedFolders.
    2. In the Synchronize Folder dialog box, choose a location for the folder on your computer, then choose a synchronization setting, and then click OK.

It doesn't say what to do or how to do it if I want to sync a folder with the mesh that also already exists on the computer/mac!!!???

I can NEVER figure out how to subscribe to a folder that I've already gotten into the mesh from another computer without creating a duplicate folder on the second computer.
I've created many many multiple copies of folders (in the mesh and on  my computer, but not where I wanted them) trying to do this.
    this is insane.

What's wrong with the old PUBLISH and SUBSCRIBE terms???
One has DEVICES which one adds to a mesh.
One PUBLISHES folders to the MESH
or one SUBSCRIBES to folders already in the MESH.

Clean up the terminology or this is never going to be as useful as it could be.

and, by the way.. it's still extremely buggy... I'm still looking to see how I submit logs.
It crashes constantly. and is currently refusing to start up on one machine (a mac).
Please don't give up on this product... and please rethink the terminology...

Here's the path to bug reports:

How to Submit Bugs and Live Mesh Logs

Note that you may not receive a response to the bug report, though. It will be transferred to the internal system to be assigned to the appropriate development group.

I have never used Live Mesh on a Mac, so I'm not sure how different the behavior is from the PC version.

As for the confusing terminology, I do agree that it is a bit confusing. Here's a bit of text I wrote up to explain how to merge an offered folder on a device connected to the Mesh after a folder has been added from one device or the Live Desktop (written for a Windows PC - the exact steps may be different on a Mac):

On the PC desktop you will get a faded light blue folder shortcut. Clicking it and clicking OK drops the folder as the sync end point on the PC desktop.

Double clicking when it is faded light blue folder, brings you to a windows titled:

    Synchronize folder

The text at the top of the window says "Synchronize folder with this computer."

    The name cannot be changed/

The location is the path to your desktop folder.

    Next to this is browse.

At the bottom of the Window is OK and Cancel.

OK accepts the default offered location - your desktop.

If you click OK, it will become a darker blue folder (still light blue) and it is now fixed to your desktop.

If you click Browse, you can navigate to a folder of your choosing.

Once you have reached that folder, click OK and accept the warning about merging with an existing folder and potential for conflicts.
