Can't run chkdsk and can't cancel it RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have multiple problems.  I have a Dell computer that runs Windows XP 2005.  A couple weekends ago I began receiving the dreaded blue screen with the D1 Stop code.  I called Dell support each time it occurred and each tech would "solve" the problem only to have it happen again.  The final tech stated I could try reinstalling my operating system but may also have to replace my hard drive.  I printed the instructions for reinstalling the operating system.  I first tried backing up my files using the "files & settings transfer wizard" but it could not complete the transfer before the blue screen stopped the process.  I ultimately just copied/moved what files/documents I wanted.  Next, I started the computer with the Windows XP CD in the CD drive however the computer would not boot from the CD.  The light on the CD drive was blinking but it looked like the computer didn't recognize a disk was in there.  I checked the CD drive from My Computer and it too didn't indicate a CD was in the drive.  The instructions advised to run chkdsk if the computer would not boot from the CD.  I tried that but chkdsk stops after completing 92% of stage 1 of 5.  It will not go any further and it will not now let me boot the computer without it.  I've tried rebooting in safe mode which has worked in the past but snow freezes up before completing the reboot since I entered the chkdsk request.

Does anyone have any suggestions short of throwing the computer out the window?  How do I cancel the chkdsk request?  I have ordered a new hard drive which won't arrive until sometime next week.
