  • Question

  • Hi,

I have a question about an investment account. I have a fund that moved from "B" class to "A" class. The download from my broker shows the activity as "Removed Shares" of B and "Add Shares" of A. My question is, would it make more sense to use the "Transfer In" and Transfer Out" activities for this type of transaction?

    Thank you.

  • Transfer Out/In is typically used for transferring a holding in kind from one account to another (say one broker to another). Remove/Add Shares is probably a better choice of the two.

  • If this is totally in an IRA or other tax-advantaged account, I would do a Sell of the old shares and a Buy of the new shares.

If it is in a non-IRA, and if all of your shares  of that investment are converted, I would change the symbol and name of the investment, and do an appropriate split.

Else, you would want a different method.
