LM is creating duplicate folders and syncing .eml files

Question
-
A colleague and I are sharing data to a LM folder from different locations. About a week ago I noticed that LM had created a new folder on my PC with -001 appended to the folder name. Earlier this week, I noticed that LM has now created another duplicate folder with -002 appended to the folder name. However, the LM folder on the web contains the correct data and duplicates. LM is not creating new folders on my colleagues PC.
Not sure if this has any bearing, but within the LM folder on the web is a sub-folder where we are keeping an export file from Business Contact Manager (.bcm). This folder had been on the LM desktop, but we moved it into the folder mentioned above last week. We had not noticed any syncing of .eml files until around the time that the BCM folder was moved.

Stephen,
At this point I don't recall for certain exactly what happened. I'm fairly certain that I moved the BCM folder into another LM folder Windows Explorer on my PC. I don't think the BCM folder was moved in LM, becuase it wouldn't let me. However, I'm certain that I did not turn off LM sync when I moved BCM on my PC.
I've turned sync off for awhile, while I try to get things straightened out. I've merged most of the files in -001 and -002 back into the original folder LMFolder on my PC.
When I turn sync back on, will it look for the folder on my PC named LMFolder and sync with it, or will it create another folder with the contents that are in LMFolder on LiveMesh?
Part of the problem I have is that the majority of the files in on my PC in LMFolder are linked to records in BCM which does not automatically reset the link if the file is moved to a new folder location.
BTW, it's obvious to me that a lot of this might go away in the future if we were able to sync BCM between our PC's. We have a VPN in place but have not been able to get BCM to sync.
Thanks for your help.

Does the folder contain .eml files? if so, that would be the cause of an endless loop of synchronization - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/LiveMesh/thread/8f0a3611-fa64-43ae-bac0-e87685366fc8
I don't understand the order of events you describe: "This folder had been on the LM desktop, but we moved it into the folder mentioned above last week." How did you move the folder? Did you *first* stop the folder from being synchronized to/from all Mesh devices before the folder was moved? If you have nested a Mesh folder into another Mesh folder, that could also be the cause as nested Mesh folders are unsupported and can cause unusual results.

Stephen, First, thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. Regarding the .eml file, I looked at the history on LM and was able to determine where the .eml was coming from; it was buried back in a folder of data from 2002. I deleted it so that should take care of it. A little sidebar here. Because of the size of the window displaying History the location of the file was truncated. I couldn't copy it (still truncated) and of course mouse over didn't display anything either. Fortunately, the folder began with 2002 so finding the culprit folder wasn't hard. Would have been a real hassle if the folder name had been less unique. Regarding moving folders around. Any manipulations I've done with folders have been done on my PC. I assumed that that was OK. Does LM create a new occurance (-001, -002) if you move a folder into the synced folder on the PC unless you turn off syncing? Ken

Sorry for the delayed reply, Ken.
If you have a folder that is in a Mesh folder on your PC (any device in the Mesh) and you move it to a new location into another Mesh folder, it can certainly cause a duplicate to be created. This would be especially true if Mesh was trying to sync into that folder.
If, however, you move a folder or file into a Mesh folder on the PC, it is treated by Mesh as new content within the Mesh folder to replicate to the rest of the Mesh.
Once again, for clarification, what does this mean, exactly: "This folder had been on the LM desktop, but we moved it into the folder mentioned above last week." ? As I read it, you took a folder that was a Mesh folder and moved it to be within another Mesh folder. If so, that's a no-no.

When you enable sync again, you should be able to specify what folder you wish to sync with on each PC.
What I would do is change the sync settings on the Live Desktop to never sync that folder with any PC. Then remove the folder from the Live Desktop. Add the folder back on the primary PC and configure the sync settings for the folder to sync with the other PCs. On each PC you should then be offered a blue shortcut folder on the desktop. You can then click that folder, and click browse to point to the desired folder. Don't just click OK or it will sync to the desktop.

By the way, I've marked your last reply as the answer since you identified that you moved a Live Mesh folder into another Live Mesh folder on a PC, which is the likely cause for the crazy behavior. In effect, you created a looping/recursive sync condition.
In my opinion, Live Mesh should have prevented you from doing this, so that would be a bug since it doesn't currently prevent you from moving Live Mesh end point folders on a PC. The worst case is moving a LM folder into another LM folder, but moving a PC on the PC when it is a LM folder can have undesired consequences no matter where the new destination is.
