Office Genuine Advantage Notifications (KB949810) refused to install (Win XP SP3/Office 2003) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Office Genuine Advantage Notifications (KB949810) refused to install.  I get the following error message:

See which updates failed to install Installation Failure

    Error Code: 0x80070643

I've gone to the WGA web site and both Windows Xp and Microsoft Office validate just fine.

I've run the WGA Diagnostics program.  Here's the output from the Windows tab:

I'm concerned because I don't want to run an unpatched version of Windows and I suspect this patch not installing is blocking other newer patches that I need on this computer.

  • Hello Tomasthanes,

    ----------For Notifier install issue----------

Even though the Office Genuine Advantage Notifier is our program, the download and install mechanism is Windows Update.  I recommend posting in the XP Windows Update Answers Forum http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/threads or contacting Windows Update support at http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527 (the link to support is in the upperright hand corner).

    -----------For DMS error when Activating-------------

The fact that your XP is a Volume License indicates that you received the XP from the orginization that owns the License License Agreement because Volume License are not sold to consumers. Since your XP is Volume License, your Windows 7 may be also.  Volume License for Windows 7 come in two forms KMS Client and MAC

KMS Clients: do not activate the same a consumer copies of Windows.  They Activate by connecting to a KMS Server located within the same lan or wan as the KMS Client. in other words, the KMS Client does not Activate by connecting to Microsoft's Activation Servers, they Activate by connecting to the orginization's own KMS Server.

MAC: activates just like a consumer copy of Windows except, the MAC key can be used for a limited numbr of Activations.  When the limit is reached, the company that owns the MAC can request (or buy) additional licenses

DMS error in Windows 7 during Activation usually occures when a KMS Client tries to Activate but is unable to connect to the KMS Server.  This would mean either a) you are attempting to Activate the KMS Client while outside the organization's network or b) if the KMS Client is within the same network as the KMS Server, it has not been configured with the address in which to find the server.  The resolution for these issues would be to either Activate the KMS Client from within the organization's network or contact the organization's IT Dept for instruction on how to configure the Client.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • I just tried to activate my copy of Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) as well and that failed with the following message:

A problem occured when Windows tried to activate.  Error Code 0x8007232B.  "DNS name does not exist".

I don't know whether this failure is related to the WGA failure.

The activation error seems to be related to a DNS error where it can't find a server.

My ISP is Cox (cable, "High Speed Internet" (tm)) and I'm using the default DNS servers that I get from their DHCP server.  [*Not* hardcoded in the Linksys firewall.]
