  • A "Blocked VLK" is a Volume License Key that is valid, but was licensed solely to a corporation or larger enterprise/business. Blocked VLK's are Product Keys that Microsoft has received consent from the original owner to block usage of. A VL Product Key is non-transferrable to individuals. In order to resolve your non-genuine licensing issue, please visit: www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on "Validate Windows". When validation fails, you'll see a button to click on which will provide information on how to acquire a WGA Kit.

Also, your copy of Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage is non-genuine. You'll need to uninstall it, then visit a nearby store that sells computer software and purchase a genuine version of Microsoft Office.

  • Ro-Meow,

Right now, your Dell Dimension 4500S computer has a Volume Licensing edition of XP Pro installed (Line 8), and that installation was done with a now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) (Line 2).  VLKs are blocked by Microsoft at the request of the original keyholder for such reasons as the key was lost, stolen, compromised, misused, or expired.  Also, MS may have blocked the key if it notices a pattern of misuse, ie, more installations of XP using that key than authorized.

As a rule, VL editions of XP should not be sold to individual consumers.  Businesses, schools and gov'ts normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers.  Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

This is why you were seeing the "software counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of XP is an unauthorized installation.

Some Good News and some Bad News:  Your Office 2003 Pro installation is showing as Genuine, but your installation of Office XP Pro w/Front Page is showing as nongenuine.

Luckily, the solution to your problem is simple.  Use the recovery solution supplied by Dell to replace the nongenuine volume installation of XP Pro with the genuine OEM installation of Windows.  The Certificate of Authenticity affixed to the computer will tell you which edition of XP came with the computer.  It's likely your computer did not come from Dell with XP Pro, but probably XP Home or Media Center.  If it did come with XP Pro, you can use the Key Updater Utility to "genuine-ize" your installation of XP Pro.

Be sure to back up and offload your data before you do this because typically the recovery process destroys all data on the hard disk.  If the computer does not have Dell PC Restore by Symantec installed, your other option is to use the Dell OS Reinstallation CD.  If you do not have the Reinstallation CD supplied by Dell, you can order the CD for many Dell models directly from Dell for a reasonably modest fee, usually around $15.  If they cannot help you, try http://www.restoredisks.com
