The system is complaining because it's run out of grace period - which usually means that you neglected to activate it.
from your description, it sounds as if you simply need to use Telephone activation.
telephone activation (operator calls)
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type
SLUI 4
and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

Thanks!
Unfortunately, the fix did not work. After reboot I tried to activate it again, but it showed me the same message as above...any other idea I could try out?

Try using this Fix It solution.

Why on earth would you expect a fixit for a completely different error-type to have any effect here?

Thanks for your answer. I was able to activate windows by telephone activation! I didn't even need the operator; I simply entered the code I got by phone! What I don't understand is why this didn't work with the regular online activation...anyway...the important thing is that I got rid of the activation message :)Monday, February 17, 2014 8:27 PM

Glad to hear it - sometimes the activation system complains because of the number of activations that have been attempted but failed, and after that Operator activation is required.
