OEM SLP copies of Windows like yours need to link with the SLIC table in the BIOS in order to remain activated. The manufacturer has provided a back up product key for when this fails. Find the COA sticker affixed to the bottom of your computer or in the battery compartment. Copy the product key. Click Start, type "slui.exe 3" and hit Enter. Follow the instructions.

I cant find it, there is a sticker under the specs for the hp, which I assume that's where it would be but its very worn. (it has the Microsoft product licence ect ) so can I therefore assume that im up a creek without a pre-verbal paddle?Monday, January 23, 2012 5:31 PM

There is no other record of the COA product key. Sorry.
The other option is to order the recovery dvds from the manufacturer or a third party like Recovery-Disks.com and recover to factory condition. You will need to back up your files and reinstall your software and files after recovery. The recovery media will not require you to enter a product key since the OEM SLP key is embedded in the software.

Some have managed it, and some have not.
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type
SLUI 4
and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions - but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you.
