WHS2011 - Cant modify shared folder from client in Windows Explorer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Setup is WHS2011 on an HP Microserver and a Windows 7 64bit PC.

I have added same user to WHS2011 with same password as I am logged into on the Win7 PC. The user has been given Read/Write access to server folders during creation of the user. WHS2011 has joined the Homegroup set up on the Win7 PC. Both are members of Workgroup called WORKGROUP. The connector s/w has been installed on the Win7 PC without issue.

If I browse to e.g. Network > WHSServer > Music in Windows Explorer and then try to copy some music to it, I cant. Don't understand why not!!!! get "You need permission to perform this action" with [Try Again] button (which doesnt work either!).

If I use the launchpad to run remote web access, log in as user, go to shared folders > Music and upload from the interface it works fine. This is however clunky and slow! I just want to use the network share to upload files and generally manage the share content the other users have read access to via the Homegroup.

    Any ideas?

  • HomeGroup and WHS share permissions do not work well together (HomeGroup overrides WHS) - try removing your server from the HomeGroup and setting individual user permissions via the Dashboard.

  • If the homegroup permission for the share in question is set to read only, your problem is that homegroup permissions override windows permissions.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks very much. Homegroups definately screwed up the permissions. I am relatively IT literate but after spending a hour on the WHS2011 server setting permissions directly, doing homegroup share with, dashboard changes and comparing the resultant permissions I am none the wiser!! Will steer clear of homegroups and use the dashboard and set permissions. I'd much rather do things explicitly rather than rely on behind the scenes goings on!

I also have the book "Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 3rd Edition by Paul McFedries", but this has scant info on homegroups apart from how to add your WHS2011 box to one!
