Remote Login problem

  I set up a homeserver several years ago accessed through an XP Pro machine.  XP Pro is developing alsheimer's so I have installed a Windows 7 Pro machine to take over those duties with the same username and password.  I have installed the connector software.  I can login through the new machine from within the local network but from without I get an error saying that either the username or password in incorrect.  What is happening?
