One Care seems to be preventing me from seeing the hub drives - asking for an ID & password from my virgin laptop RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I have 2 Portege laptops in my circle and neither of them (both XP) can get to the drives on my hub machine (Vista, HP). I've shared everything and thensome and the best I can get is to an "access denied" reaction when I try to map a hub drive on one of the Porteges.  What simple thing am I missing? I've also turned off all firewalls and exposed almost every other access I can fine. Fortunately I live in the deep woods of rural Maine.<g>  Thanks,  Mike

  • I've moved your post to the firewall topic.

I'm not sure if the following will be of any use, since you report that turning off the OneCare firewall did not resolve the problem. Since the problem is from the XP machines to the Vista machine, I suspect that the issue is basic File and Printer Sharing configuration of permissions in Vista. You may wish to review the following information, paying particular attention to the "Password Protected Sharing" note in the first section - http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/e20e6875-7210-47bb-bf19-5c60e6ae86151033.mspx

Sharing and OneCare (probably not your issue since it didn't work with the firewall off...):

Open OneCare on each of the computers.

    Click Change Settings

On the firewall tab, click configure firewall

If the network is shown as Public, click Change Location to change it to "Home or Work."

    Click the Advanced Settings button

    Click Network connections tab.

If there are multiple active connections shown, you may need to disable the extras in your Windows network connections settings. (Network and Sharing Center, manage connections, in Vista; Right click My Network Places and select Properties on the Start menu in XP)

On the Ports and Protocols tab, add a check mark next to File and Printer Sharing - for subnet and Internet if the first setting alone (after all of the above are verified) does not allow Sharing to work.

If all of the above fail, please contact support.
