ASUS laptop: Windows 7 Build 7600 "not genuine"

Question
-
I am attempting to help a neighbor resolve this issue. Sometime around April 2011 this laptop started reporting "Windows 7 Build 7600, This copy of Windows is not genuine".
slui 4 does not provide a phone activation option. The phone option is replaced by "Contact ASUSTek Computer Inc. to help resolve this problem". This links to a generic microsoft help page and is thus pretty useless.
When attempting to enter the COA in the "Type your product key" field, it fails on the forth character, which happens to be a numeric digit.
If all else fails, can I use an in-place upgrade using a genuine microsoft windows 7 DVD (upgrade disk), with the ASUS COA from the affected computer? The "OEM" product ID is apparently not a US key. My understanding is that this PC was purchased new from Best Buy, if that matters.
I am assuming, from what I've read so far, that the "no slic table" message below is a key part of the problem.

malwarebytes didn't find anything, even with a full system scan, nor did avast. I tried one restore point, to no avail. Earlier restore points would not load. I cleaned up a number of registry issues and temporary files with ccleaner.
Matt SaleOK – please post a new MGADiag report, AFTER undoing any registry alterations made by CCleaner – no registry ‘cleaner’ is safe to use without considerable knowledge of the registry.

Experimented with the COA, 2 characters were very difficult to read because the label is on the bottom of the PC where it gets rubbed off. Once I realized one character was a letter rather than a number, it was accepted and now it is back to being recognized as valid.

The validation error suggests that your problem is the result of a malware infestation.Download (free) MalwareBytes Anti-malware from www.malwarebytes.org install and update it (do NOT activate the real-time scanner option), and run a Quick scan in all user accounts - see if that finds anything.
