New problem: Invalid activation key

    Question

  • I recently started receiving a windows activation window telling me to activate windows now or later.  I have had this computer with windows vista for several years and have never seen this box.  I chose to cancel the box 1st not knowing where it was coming from. The next time I logged in...same box, so I chose activate later, the next log in..same box, so I opted for activate now...only because my desktop background has turned all black since this box appeared the 1st time. I then rerceived a box telling me that the activation key entered is invalid, telling me to reenter the key, get a new one, or get help.  I then ran a Malware scan thinking I have a virus. Nothing found. I continue with these problems.  My computer now runs slower, my desktop background remains black and I have a note in the bottom right corner that says "Windows Vista (TM) Build 6002  This copy of Windows is not Genuine"

Please help me to understand what to do and why I am receiving this now.

I can see no problem with your report apart from the fact that it is reporting as 'Unlicensed'. This almost certainly means that for some reason, the OS is unable to properly communicate with the BIOS to self-activate.
    There are two possible solutions:-
    A) Recreate the Licensing Store -
Please try the below steps to recreate the Store with the correct data.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

    B) (and assuming that you didn't already do it in line 12 above)
Change the Product Key by clicking on the Start button, then typing
    SLUI 3
into the Search box, and hitting the Enter key - follow the instructions and enter the Product Key from your COA Sticker, and Activate by phone

    1. Type "SLUI  4" in the start menu search box, hit enter

    2. Select country or region

    3. Dial the number, DO NOT select any menu options, just wait and a person will pick up.

    4. activate by phone

  • Noel,

I ran the cmd, and followed your steps.  Once I received the window requesting the activation key, I entered the # on the bottom of my computer. I still received the message that validation is not genuine, I then checked for validation on "Genuine microsoft  software". I then received "Validation complete".  I am hoping this means that this has resolved my problem.

I will let you know if it does not.

    Thank you.

  • Just curious, any idea why this would have happened?
    Monday, October 25, 2010 5:42 PM
  • Sometimes it can be due to a BIOS update, sometimes to overly aggressive security software or settings, and sometimes it seems to be due to cosmic rays :)

In other words, so long as we can fix it, we tend not to worry too much about the cause :)

Darin may have more background info - but whether he's allowed to share it is a different matter.

  • To be honest, I don't know why Vista's Licensing Store needs to be "reset" for some people.  In the Vista forums it appears to be rather common, but in the grand scope of Vista installs, it's actually pretty rare.

I do know that in Windows 7, the Developers made the Licensing Store allot more resistant to this type of issue. But exactly what they did, I don't know.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,

    Darin MS
