PWA broken (shows exception) while restoring PWA site collection on another PWA in PS 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need urgent help.

    I am using Project Server 2010. Actually i took backup of my PWA from UAT machine and want to restore it on my Live Environment. What i am doing this because i want to get all the PWA branding, the sharepoint pages i have created and other changes i have made to the PWA site to my Live Environment of PWA

    Note before, i dont want Project Server data (e.g projects, timesheet data etc), i just only want the sharepoint site collection material of PWA.

    But when i took the backup by using SPSITE command and then restored it on another PWA on another machine, the PWA got broken and when i go to the url (http://abc/PWA), error displays like "An unexpected error has occured"

    When i enabled the debug and custom error the following error displays on PWA;

    Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

    Server Error in '/' Application.

    The server was unable to process the request due to an internal error.  For more information about the error, either turn on IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults (either from ServiceBehaviorAttribute or from the <serviceDebug> configuration behavior) on the server in order to send the exception information back to the client, or turn on tracing as per the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SDK documentation and inspect the server trace logs.

    The other pages e.g; Site Settings and sharepoint pages are working properly. Only the project server pages e.g; Home shows this exception. Please tell me if i am doing something wrong. I want to restore the backup of PWA site collection to another PWA on another machine.
    If you know any solution to this problem please inform me. I will be waiting to the reply.

    Regards,

    Maaz

  • Hi,

    As far as I am aware, what you are attempting to do is not supported. Project Server links up the SharePoint content, specifically in the PWA site with the PS databases, thus if you restore the SP content without the supporting PS databases it will throw an error.

    The safest option if you are just looking at getting the SharePoint customisations, branding and page changes across, your options are to either redeploy your changes if they were built as SharePoint features (makes it much easier in this type of scenario), manually reapply your changes or if appropriate use a tool like playbooks or DMImport (MS Solution Starter) to move settings or demand management assets across.

  • Thanks Alexander, it seems like you have understood my requirement. I need to restore the Sharepoint contents PWA (the customization: branding, the sharepoint pages i made to display the webparts, the changes in the masterpage i made etc). I found this way (restore PWA sitecollection on my destination PWA site without restoring DBs... as i heard that we dont need to restore content db if we restore the site collection by using SPSite-restore/backup) to get things done because i didnt want to do all these things manually on my live PWA... just wanted to restore the site and get all these things done

  • I would again say that .. if there is any safest way to restore the things i require from PWA? i DON'T need to restore the Project Server things (The projects, timesheets date, projects sitest etc), what i just want is the PWA site contents like branding, masterpage changes, cube modifying etc to be restored without crashing the PWA
