Question

I bought a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium over a year ago from Wal-Mart. I am now getting a message that I need to activate windows and that my copy is not genuine. I ran the test as required and this was the result:

Hi John,
As far as the windows issue, I recommend creating a no cost support request at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/contactwga
As for Office issue, there is an Update available that will install the Office Notifier. This program will identify your Office as Non-Genuine and give a Non-Genuine message when you open an Office program. Click the Learn More Online link and on the page you are taken to, there should be a link to buy a Genuine (discounted) copy of Office.
Unfortunatly, that Office Notifier update is not available from the Microsoft Download site, so you may have to wait till your Windows Update finally get the Update installed.
Sorry I couldn't be more help,

Hello jdinnis,
For your Windows Vista issue, Your Product Key comes up good, however, the Licensing Data section of the Diagnostic Report suggests that Vista's Licensing Store file may be corrupt or unreadable. Try the below steps to correct the problem.
1) Open an Internet Browser window.
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type: net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Restart your computer twice.
12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.
As for your Office issue, the Office Enterprise 2007 was installed using an Invalid Volume License Key (VLK).
VLK software is not to be sold to consumers, but are designed for large organizations that need 10s 100s or 1000s of Office installs. In this case the VLK is Invalid. This means it was created with Piracy software called a Key Generator (KeyGen). In other words, Microsoft did not create or release this product key.The reason you hadn't see the Non-Genuine message sooner is that Office doesn't have any anti-piracy systems other then Activation and this pirated Product Key is a Volume License Key that doesn't require Activation. The only way for you to have found out that the Office was Non-Genuine would have been if you had gone to http://Microsoft.com/genuine and click the 'Validate Office", gone to the Office Download site and attempted to download any validation protected content or by installing the Office Notifier. It turns out that Microsoft recently released the Office Notifier thru Windows Update and it is what is notifying you that the Office is Non-Genuine
Now, I am Not accusing you of piracy. There are a number of reason why your Office would be using a Pirated key. The three most common are:
1) You may have bought the software from a unscrupulous seller who sold you pirated software.
In which case I recommend, if possible, contacting that seller and demand the Genuine Microsoft software, that you paid for or at least a refund. I also recommend submitting a Piracy Report at http://microsoft.com/piracyor
2) You had your computer worked on (by a repair person, a friend or that smart kid down the street) and in the course of fixing the PC, they had to reinstall Office. Instead of contacting you to get the proper Product Key, (maybe due to not knowing it was wrong or due to laziness) they downloaded it from the internet.
In this case, you probably have a Genuine copy (and Product Key) of Office, you just need to uninstall the Non-genuine one and reinstall the software using the proper (Genuine) Product Keyor
3) A repair person, a friend or that smart kid down the street may have thought they were doing you a Favor by installing a copy of Office on your computer, "for Free". But in fact he/she installed a Pirated Copy. It's all togeather possible they didn't know they were doing anything wrong and thought they were just being nice.
In this case, the best way to resolve the issue would be to uninstall the software and if you still want to use Office, buy it from a trusted retailer or online store.
Thank you,

I have done as the steps as stated above for windows vista and now get an error message stating that an unauthorized change was made to windows reenter the product key when I enter the key provided with the windows premium disk purchased last year from WalMart I get another error message saying that this key is invalid for this version of windows enter a key for windows vista premium. How do I resolve that issue?
As for the office enterprise 2007, it was purchased and given to me by my ex-fiance as a birthday present. Since I have no way of contacting her to see where she purchased it and as you stated it may be pirated, which I did not realize since all the documentation and disk looked legitimate, is there anyway I can purchase a proper key for it since I no longer have the disk or documentation for it (they were destroyed in a fire).
Thank you

Thank you for your response Darren, I have been working with Microsoft support on the issue and it was discovered that that problem stems from SP2 not accepting the product key for SP1. The problem is being resolved by Microsoft by replacing the current disc I own with one that has SP2. Thank you for your help and I hope anybody reading this sees that by contacting the above link given by you for Microsoft support will more than likely give them the solution needed.Wednesday, March 10, 2010 6:29 PM
