WHS on a new computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • I run WHS on an old computer. Now I want to install WHS on a newer computer and move all data from my old server to my new one. How should I do? Can I have WHS installed on two computers?

    Please help me!

  • The simplest approach would be to install on the new computer, but don't try to activate yet, because you won't be able to reuse your product key. Then just copy from the shares on one server to the shares on the other. This will take a while; exactly how long will depend on how much data you have in your shares, and on how fast your home network is.

Once you've copied all your shares over, go through phone activation for your new server. Microsoft has been very understanding about the need to upgrade/replace servers, so even though the product is theoretically "tied" to the original hardware, they will normally allow you to reactivate.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
